Guys,

I need some feedback about Marcy MX system
http://www.ajmshopping.co.uk/more_details.asp?ItemCode=04418
or
Marcy Eclipse Powercage
http://www.simplyfitnessequipment.co.uk/GymAccessories/Marcy-Eclipse-Power-Cage

I know that probably most of you will reply saying that you have to have Powr rack at home. But you see power rack costs at least £200 then a bench £120 then a leg attchment £40 and then lat attachment £150 then a preacher curl £40 = £550.

I can't afford it at all. I am a beginner. I am 5'10" 70Kg and I have reached 50kg on Bench and Squats.

This system sounds alright to me. The rack in the system can support 140Kg and the bench can support 200 Kg (Incl user weight .. in my case its 70Kg)
The lat can support 70Kg.

The eclipse powercage is a bit better on rack capacity of 225Kg and Bench capacity of 300Kg. the lat is still the same at 70kg.

I think it will be a while when I reach all the max weights.

I guess the lat will soon run out on Lats Pull downs due to 70 Kg limit but then can be useful for triceps pull down fr a while.

What you guys say?
If any one has used it please give me an honest reply.

Thanks
Sam.

Haven't you already asked, and had answered, this question on another forum?

Anyway.....first off you don't need a leg extension, or lat attatchment or preacher curl :021:

Second, that's no better than a cheap squat rack or pair of squat stands, in as much as it's not going to save you from being pinned.

Third, set your goals higher.

Yup. Spot on from the big man.

1. Your goals are waaaaaaaaaaaaay to low.
2. You don't need either. See my thread on squat stands. Buy them. I did and they rule. They are £70 deliverd. Then buy a thick bar from Beng on here and some plates form the same place as the stands. Sorted.
3. Eat.

AS was said on other forum get a rack or squat stands, a ton of plates and buy a thick bar from me ;)

I went through the "Squat Rack" thread. It seemed to me that the couple of squat stands suggested (Marcy and York) on those can take suggested 150Kg but can go up to 180Kg. Am I reading it right?

Then what is wrong with the Marcy system I was refering to that can actually handle around the same (actually more).

Well I understand your opinion about lats and leg developer being useless and everything is SQAUTS and BENCH. Although I differ in my opinion about this as the leg curls/ extensions do isolate the muscles. But I entirely agree that they are not necessary to build mass.

Nevertheless I got your message. I will think harder and buy good basic stuff rather than shelling out money on fancy unnecessary props.

thanks

Sam.

the fact that they isolate the muscles is why they are so bad!

believe it or not everytime you do an exercise in the gym you are training the body to do that exercise, by doing a leg extension for example you are teaching your body to contract the quads without anything else, how often are you going to do that? How about when your quads contract when you're doing a squat, lunge or even leg press, how many other muscles are contracting?

By doing crappy isolation exercises you are actually detraining your nervous system.

You dont need them, the mass gains are minimal, strength gains are pointless, neurologically they are about as much use a one legged man in an arse kicking contest and you know what? That guy lost leg his doing leg extensions!

Rugbylad, can I ask what you are training for? Rugby or purely mass gains?

My advice would be to invest in a power rack, yes it would cost more. Thats why you wont buy a bench initially.

With a power rack and barbell you can throw together a pretty shit hot workout

Squats and all the variations
Deadlifts, pulls and variations
Bar Rows, T-bar Rows, Horizontal pull ups
Military Press, Push Press
Floor Press

Even Richard Simmons (http://www.richardsimmons.com/about.php) would gain a lot of mass if he hit each of those exercises hard 1-2 times per week.

You could buy a bench at a later date

Robert,
Just to confirm, which squat rack did you buy and what is the suggested max weight capacity on it?
Thanks
Sam

Good some one asked. I do play football and rugby. My intention of exercise is to build mass without losing flexibility. I would never want to be massive like Arnolds and Colemans. No offence to anyone but I don't like the huge bodies that I see in Muscle & Fitness magazines. I would like to be more of the defined lean musle body with strength and flexibility.

I actually follow Joe Weider Bodybuilding System that suggests a mix of compound movements and isolation movements on each routine. He does include squats, deadlifts and leg extension/curls. There is no lat exercise mentioned but you see the Muscle & fitness magazine always comes up with various other ways of hitting your muscles in different angles rather than doing the same movement over and over again.

Nevertheless, I assume that all of you guys are more experienced and I would take your advice.

Although no one really mentioned why the Marcy Powercage is inferior to Squat stands that Robert mentioned when they can sustain more weight.

No doubt that it does not come close to power rack.

You'll never get as big as those guys in the mags unless you seriously get into steroids and give up your job and become a fulltime bodybuilder.

The weider system is pretty poor and out of date, even when it was in date (if it was) I dont think was that good.

Lat Exercises from the list I provided:
Deadlifts and various pulls
Barbell Rows, T-bar Rows, Horizontal Pullups

If you want to maintain flexibility and improve you training to benefit sport keep and eye on my journal.

I would happily do that when you send out the free "Pikeking Illustrated Exercise Handbook"

To be fair, if he had posted this on muscletalk/zone/whatever he would be buying the supe-reverse-grip-incline-lat-blaster by now. So its good he posted on two forums.

Well I got good advice didn't I. It was the affordable supplements forum where I was suggested to look up on this forum.

Anyways, I have definitely opted out the fancy equipement, but at the same time can't afford to invest much into Power rack (£200) plus bench, so as Robert said, I am planning to buy Squat Stands (York £70) and a good weight capacity bench (Powerline for £120) and get a doorway chinning bar (£10).

Sam.

mate, you need something in case you fail...

i think you should get a power rack and forget about the bench for now, or make a bench like rob

How do you make a bench look gay?

LMAO. Bench maybe. Everything else isn't even close.

Fred
14-04-2005, 14:34
bench = as good as or better
squat = maybe 10kg behind at most
deadlift = quite a bit but i havent maxed in ages nor do i have any decent equipment to use

Robert
14-04-2005, 15:09
bench - agree
squat - you are no where near 170 raw which is was my last maxout. i was about 1" high and i was shatterd.. and you would collapse under 180+.
deadlift - i double overhanded 200 abotu 2 motnhs before i got injured. you are no where near that either.
