Its not a sport, but I am good at it and want to get better.

Having not bent a nail in about 6 months, I feel its time to get back into it. Tried a 6"x6mm shiny bright nail today and barely kinked it.

So went straight to B&Q and ghot loads of 6+8mm steel and some coach bolts.

I want a program complete with assistance exercises that is going to take me back to bending a 5"-6" nail and beyond.

Over the last day or so I have doen 4-5 singles with some random shit/off cuts I found in my nail box. Mostly 200x6mm, and some 180x6mm.

Assistance is also an issue. I know what I think is the best assistance for nail bending, but I want some unbias ideas form others first.

So people, programs please...

(hint, I am thinking synaptic facillitation)

Just tried a 6" nail myself,. Hadn't bent for about 6 months aswell, but it was supprisingly easy. I keep mine inside, in the boiler cupboard, so I'm guessing that the warmer they are, the easier they are to bend.

Knowing that you post on FI, I would follow Pecz's routine. He managed to bend a red nail in about 2 months. His method, if I remember correctly, was high frequency, but not to failure.

All bars 6mm thick. All lengths in mm. M/W/F/S.

Week 1.
1. 4x1x190
2. 4x1x190
3. 4x1x190
....
7. 2x1x180

Week 2.
1. 4x1x180
...
7. 2x1x170

Ad infinitum.

When I say 4x1 I mean morning/midday/afternoon/night. 1x1. Any takers?

yeah, yeah, very funny. :019:

Anyway, have you read this.

very interesting especially the bit about bending with explosive power, they really seem to push this theory, not a slow powerful bend, but dynamic force.

Not saying it wouldn't work, but I would up the volume to 10-15 bends per session, although this could turn out to be quite expensive.

Er.. I wasn't being sarcastic. Don't put yourself down.

Anyways, I too advocate explosive bending. I have done it for some time. Do you start the bend double overhand, or double underhand?

Exactly. 4x200m is less than 1m. and its comes in 1m rods. Each 1m rod is about £1.50.

Sorry, i'm not used to the new gentle Robert, I much prefer the old Robert de Tourettes, at least you know where you stand with him. :003:

double overhand, or folding as it sometimes known as.

Note to self: Be and ass hole to Jon, he likes it.

I start the bend double underhand and finish it double overhand.

Revised it: Todays bend: (mm x reps, all 6mm diameter)

200x1 190x1 180x1 170x1 160x1 150xKink of 10-20 degrees.

This will be the pattern from now on. Mon-Fri. Though I will not attempt 150 (6") again until I can 'U' 160 in less than 5 seconds.

Cold rolled stell is harder than a shiny bright 6" nail, and so by the time I can bend a 150x1 in under 5 seconds a nail should be a joke.

Week 1.
190x4

Week 2.
180x4

Week 3.
170x4

Week 4.
160x4

Week 5.
150x4

Week 6.
6" nail.

Thats the plan.

Also, I am going to buy the IM 'bag o' nails' and make the red nail a longer term goal, about 6-12 months or so. As by the time I have bent the 6" shiny bright, I will be back in full trainig and the deadlift 100x1x100 will take priority.

EDITED: Better plan.

Stronger, not harder. Althought the two are related...

LOL. I know. Harder to bend. You git. :021:

I would prefer it if you used the terminology "more difficult to bend".

Thanks.

Can it.

Just ordered 50 of blue/green and yellow nails off IM.com

$60 deliverd. That shitty bag o' nails is £65 + £11 delivery on pullum. ******s.

So basically, I got twice the amount of nails, for half the price.

JESUS ****IGN CHRIST PULLUM MUST RAKE IT IN.

youve got me interested in this, is there any reason it cant be a length of 6mm steel?

Robert
24-03-2005, 18:16
It can. Thats what I am bending right now. A 6mm 6" peice of steel form B&Q is more difficult to bend* than a 6" nail though.

Also, a 6" shiny bright nail is about 2/3 the difficulty of an Ironmind Red nail, which has a yeild strength of about 600lbs at 90 degrees.

Go to B&Q and get some 6mm rods and cut it up. Have a bash mate, its fun. Its hell on the fingers and hands though, so be careful.

Those are not my personal bests. I have 'U'ed a 6" and a 5" before now. A 5" is much much much harder as its small. The one with the big kink is a 5", next to a 6" for reference.

I know a guy who owns a fabrication company, he could make 6mmx150mm rods v cheap :023: . I'll ask him for a price. Im gonna give it a go, im sure we got some steel at work.

Cheers :023:

thinking about having a crack at this, can i just got to B&Q and get some standard wood nails that are 6inches long? Might it be wide to start with longer nails etc?

Robert
06-05-2005, 17:01
you can yes. but you will find them a bit harder than you expected and may damage yourself. work your way up.

BFT

got the six inchers, yeah there not gunna bend any time soon, whats a good way to build up to this?

From what i can gather thick bar training is good for grip strength, does this have much crossover to nail bending? I cant afford a thick bar im thinking about sticking some pipe lagging ruond my normal bar, its not ideal but might it suffice?

Narc

Different kind of grip strength but you should definitely get a thickbar, isn't pipe lagging foam, as in soft?

BFT
13-05-2005, 11:51
I suspected so, but should get a bit of thick bar training in anyway, i have a spare thin bar, think ill weld a length of scaffold round that.

Robert
13-05-2005, 12:00
I wouldn't bother mate. Since posting this nail bending thing I worked my way back up to a 6"er and now I'm bored. I am fast comng to the conclusion that grip training (apart form thick bar stuff and mega heavy static holds) is juts crap and pointless.

Get a thick bar.

I have never bent a 6inch nail tho so to me its a challange, like any other form training i do it to improve on where i am now, there is no real point to it. Plus i think it would be a cool party trick.
