OK, so couldve put this on the end of my earlier Krav Maga thread, but anyway..

As you know Ive been deciding this year if\what martial art to try as a taster, to see if I like them.
Last night, a dude invited me to one of the largest boxing clubs in the area, which he has been going to for years to see if I like it, so im going on one of my off days from weights.
SO..do the 2 mix? Ive heard of many boxers not touching weights, whereas some are beginning to integrate them into their training.
Im not intending to fight properly, especially at 35 I feel like ive missed the boat to get really good at it, but for some basic self defence and fitness it does seem a good shout.
Anyone here box, and do you drastically cut weights down, even to 2 day per week or something? Any other thoughts on boxing for the weight trainee??

boxing is awesome, great for fitness and also very good for self defence if you're interested in that side of it.

at 35 you will be only able to fight pro, as far as I'm aware amateur stops at 35.

weights and boxing certainly do mix, there are of course dinosaurs out there who believe weights will make you slow, but like all these sort of things its the stupid uniformed people saying that, if you train like a bodybuilder it will be crap for boxing. How much lifting you do is gonna depend on how much boxing you do.

starting boxing expect your shoulders and upper back to take a pounding, you should make sure you do more pulling/retratction/ext rotation volume than you do pushing, maybe 1.5-2 : 1.

if boxing and weights dont mix, take a look at David Haye, he didnt get to that size without weights, also Alistair Overeem.

Cheers for the reply mate.
No worries on the pulling\pushing ratio, would you recommend getting some bands and doing band pullaparts on off days, or merely keep the ext rotation to weights days?
Do you have a suggestion for exercises you would recommend for retraction, and rep ranges etc?

I wouldnt say I train like a BB, its whole body stuff these days, mostly focusing on the basics, with not too much isolation stuff.

I guess Ill figure out if I prefer more boxing to weights once Ive had a session or few.

Appreciate the feedback!
