For mass. Nothing else. Let the games begin:

My take: Deadlifts rule all.

This is what I have noticed:

when dead lifting and squatting my back musculature and thickness was much greater than when I was only squatting and doing Romanian dead lifts, but I was heavier over all went squatting and dead lifting so my experiences may be slightly invalid

I must say that when front squatting only, my quadriceps looked a lot more defined and separated even though my legs were smaller then when I was squatting and dead lifting in the past

Can i vote for a it of voth as for back mass i think deads rule but you need the big glutes and hams/quads too other wise you will have great lats but never wear shorts!

Deadlifts for me. Squats are great but I found once I started hitting the DLs regularly I definately grew more.

If I had to choose one it would be deadlifts.

Not very accurate poll. Who has only done squats or dealifts with no assistance and one in each training cycle? My guess is no one. How do you know thet the squat/dead was soley responsible for your gains?

I have done a dead only routine and squat only routine (but did use assistance). The squat one was better. I have squatted twice a week with good results. Although my training experiences are not conclusive but they do point in the direction of the squat.

Most reputable books (written by reputable people) recommend squatting as the uber exercise. This guy on other forums who is respected recommends lots of squats. Rob did a 3x a week squat routine with good results. 20 rep squats anyone?

Any similar storries with deads? Anyone want to try?

I have never seen anyone squat properly. I believe the deadlift is easier to execute. My guess is people dont get as good squat results because their form is crap. I bet most people reading this swear blind that they squat at least to parallel (as do all in the gyms i've been to), but on closer inspection they are several inches higher.*

Squatting has bigger carry over to deads, assuming technique is good

Im siding with the squat for these reasons, although deads are great too.

In response to marks journal:

we'll agree to disagree.

*This is not an invitation for squat video's or saying "I squat atg, my form must be good" etc...

Hmm. I was going to post 'I'll go with squats cause I find them less technical and less likely to injure you' !

I guess it's squats because they're the most exhausting physically demanding basic exercise and I think they're better for leg development. I had a light burn in my upper back and forearms from holding the bar during todays sesh.

I prefer the deadlift. This idea that squats will make you grow "all over" is a massive over exaggeration, that I expect comes from the alleged finding that squats create the best anabolic response. Squats will add mass primarily to the thighs, glutes, and lower back. This idea that squats will add inches to the upper arms is just fantasy. Deadlifts and squats are different. Deadlifts will add far more mass to the upper body than squats. If you want tree-trunk thighs, focus all your efforts on squats... If you want strong hands, huge forearms, a well developed back and huge traps, focus more effort on deadlift. It is simple.

I will say it again, when I have tried squats only, my upperbody thickness was much less than when I was dead lifting and squatting at the same time

Deadlift for me. Once I started doing them religiously, I grew more. Oh yeah, I haven't been able to squat properly in about 6 months so I've been on leg press. Maybe I don't count.

I prefer Deadlift although it would be hard to say one has more benefits than the other
