Hi,

my names paul, I live in Paignton, Devon, UK and know TAT70 :flex:.

i train brazilian jiu jitsu (purple belt) at www.fightworx.co.uk, I also train sambo and judo (when I get chance).

i work out at the gym, currently 3 times a week, as I'm trying to increase my strength (previously I was doing 5 times a week, lots of kettle bells, love the kettle bells).

i'm 78Kg, looking to get to 82-85kg. my main aim is to increase my leg size (finding it very, very hard!!!!!!), my upper body is okay and takes to training well, but my legs need to grow 1) for jiu jitsu wrestling and 2) because i look out of proportion. My legs aren't weak, just skinny (14" calves and 24" thigh)...

squats
------

110Kg for 6 reps (squat to knees at 90 degrees)
80kg for 10 reps (deep squat all the way)

leg press
--------

280kg for 10 reps

as said before I'm training for power / size, so i'm resting much more, usually i train very, very actively (lots of kettle bells, explosive movements, etc). I'm packing my face full of food and slowly gaining a little (very little) bit of weight.

i love wide grip pull ups :-)

I also love to train on the balance board (core stability) and gym ball (movement drills). Yes people do give me lots of funny looks! This is an awesome video on youtube I found
http://www.youtube.com/user/FORGE5416

I train at http://www.winners2000fitness.co.uk/ (cos it was cheap to sign up :-) ).

Cheers, great forum looking forward to learning loads :-)

Hello, and welcome aboard.

With regards to putting on size; however much you're eating, just eat more than that. And then when you adjust to that, eat more again, and so forth. I've put on almost 3 stone this year, not too much of it fat.

What's your training layout?

welcome along, get a journal going.

I train

Monday - chest / shoulder / tricep

Tuesday - legs, legs, legs, smash the hell out of them

Wednesday - jiu jitsu

Thursday - rest

Friday - jiu jitsu

Sat - rest

Sun - rest or jiu jitsu

My diet is 40g protein, 40g carbs, 15g fat per meal x 6 (approx 2600 calories).

I also throw in 'crap' from time to time, ice cream, biscuits, etc, but not very often.

I know I should have three high calorie cheat meals per week, but often it's just one (my wife is on a diet which doesn't help!).

I love natural peanut butter and eat spoonfuls during the day as well to try and get extra calories in, plus mct (though it's blooming expensive, so trying not to use it).

My upper body isn't too bad (chest needs work), so I'm trying to 'maintain' that while I build up the lower body as well to get the proportion. I have a 43" chest, 32" waist, so trying to keep that from growing too much and looking even more like stick leg man lol

I'll put up my training diary soon, nothing amazing at all I'm not really strong, my best areas are explosive energy (i.e. sled pull, box jumps, pull ups, incline press ups, etc), love that kind of training, but i've stopped that for the moment to grow, burning all those extra calories and i'm not going to grow, doh!

cheers

You really do need to eat more than that.

Totally agree there, I put on 1Kg in 4 weeks, though eating more whilst trying to eat clean is flipping hard, feel bloated must of the time now.

It is man, it really is. I would suggest going for quasi-clean. What does your diet look like then?

At the moment?

delve back into the archives, there is a surprising amount of training logged by Andy that more recent members of IC might not have seen

I know, I know. I was just being facetious. Sorry.

Ah yes silly me

Friday - Bicep / Back and evening Jiu Jitsu (hard finish to the week that one, friday is scrapping night as well, so very hard).

I love Gi Jiu jitsu and no gi. Gi from the technical aspect and no gi for the sheer pace and activity of it. Nothing like a bit of sweat to liven things up

Welcome to the forum. Nice to have another jitsuka on board.

What's the proportion of gi to no-gi that you do? What does your weights routine look like? Are you looking to move up to middle heavy?

paulcarthy

I do 90% gi and 10% no gi, I find the gi the best way to train. I trained recently with Rodney Ellis and amazing gi fighter who used the no gi game whilst in the gi (i.e. not holding the suit, etc), was amazing and different to roll with him.

http://www.scjja.com/

At the moment my weight routine is for size (i.e. legs), I'm fed up with having pin legs, so want to pack some size on them, then I think i'll lean up all over with more specific routines. It will probably mean I move up from <79Kg, but that's a sacrifice I'm happy to make. I compete masters now anyway (33yrs old) and don't compete so much these days, happier training and coaching.

Cool. I do about 75% gi and 25% no-gi at the moment though until recently I only trained gi. I'd probably still be doing that if I hadn't mangled my elbows. No-gi has improved my gi game: I'm much faster/more aggressive and have better controls. Now when I roll in the gi I tend not to make grips. I find that the guys' size/strength advantage is less of a problem in no-gi.

Dammit, seems everything on the interweb is making me want to get back to grappling

I'm pretty much grappling without gripping so maybe it would be okay for you too?

PikeKing

If i had somewhere to learn no gi stuff i'd be ok but Judo is all gripping. I'm pretty sure that issue is gonna go away, shame about the back though

You could play an anti-pretty Judo game: arm drags, double legs, single legs etc. :thumbup1:

How long did you sign up at winners for?

If you ever fancy a session at 'THE FRIDGE' let me or TAT70 know, we've got plenty of weights and kit to play with and unlike some gyms in this area we allow chalk and silly tight t shirts and spiky hair is not the in-thing!

Welcome to the forum mate.
