I have spent much of my solitude latley watching films so i thought i would start a movie review thread for us all to recommend and slate films lol! Remember everyone is entitled to thier oppinion and there is no such thing as good and bad taste, just personal preferences when it comes to this sort of thiing.

My first review is I Robot

Starring Will Smith, I only saw this yesterday and i thought it was really good, im gonna watch it again in fact, the robots were really good despite what i had heard and the story was not too bad for an action film, plenty of cool effects, small plot twist and witty lines kept me entertained throughout, Watch it you freaks 8/10

saw Blade Trinity last night....

i'd give the coats 9/10
id give the fighting 6.5/10
id give Blade's head tats 9/10
id give the biting 7/10
id give the weaponry 8/10
id give the soundtrack 9/10 (its great)
ig give the storyline 5/10

Not bad this, dark, cracking RzA soundtrack, some decent-ish (i.e. flashy) martial artists in it. Mind you the plot's straight out of Buffy. Made my bird jump. :031:

I'm sure some of youse watched Commando last night. It's good fun but it's also most irritatingly unrealistic action film, worse than Rambo III. Take for instance the feeble punch knocking everyone out, ripping a chair out of a car, magically growing bullet belts, tearing a padlocked chain off a gate, 30 round magazines with 1000 rounds in them, waggling a gun from the hip and killing 20 baddies without getting hit, Arnie getting thrown around by the boss man at the end... Arrrgggh :088:

LMAO I agree!

The ripping the padlocked chain off the gate with ease was what stood out the most as ridiculous.

Just got done watching Collateral. Usually, I have a hard time watching Tom Cruise, but I really enjoyed this one. Jamie Fox is excellent and Tom isn't that bad as a baddie. Also, I'm a big fan of Michael Mann movies and this didn't disappoint. It's nowhere near as good as Heat, but a decent two hours.

Boxer My Hellboy review....

W4NK! to many flaws in the plot and stupid stuff going on and what exactly was hellboy needed for? All he did was shoot a big gun and fight, honestly the sidekick was needed for? He is fire proof but eletricity didnt hurt him either, yet when his horns were hot it burnt his fingers???? An dont mention that twice closing door in the pendulum scene, he throws a guy through the door to safety just in time before the door closes, then jumps through the same door just befre it closes!!! IT'S ALREADY CLOSED!!!!!! CRAP

Name them, i agree with what you say though, i thought collateral was a bit pants, hellboy ...well see above, Troy erm next!, Confidence i thought was very enjoyable and clever good film imo, American beauty was good,Usual suspects, green mile too, erm thats about it,

I have got smallville season 1 on dvd call me sad but i like it :)

Robert
16-02-2005, 16:54
Movies I was happy to pay £5 to see and would still:
LOTR II
Matrix I (II and III were shit)
Both Ace ventura's (without exception, the funniest films of all time)
Underworld (cool, uber cool)
Movies that are clever/good enough to justify the £5, but not enough for me to want to see them twice:
American Beauty (nice twist)
Identity (****ed up, great ending)
Blade I and III (II was crap)
Mean Machine with Vinne Jones in (he is a prick, but its ****ing funny)
Movies that are 'ok':
Jurassic Park (I love dino's)
Gladiator (saw it once and was great, have a sneaking suspicion that if I see it again it will be shit)
That blind samurai one (saw it at a mates house)
The Rock (borderline)
Shit movies that are a waste of money/human life/resources:
Just about every other film ever made - esp them shitty gangster ones.
4 worst movies of all time without exception:
Independence day
The Godfather (all of them)
Braveheart
EDIT: Lock stock

hulk.

well as you can guess by my choice of avatar i do like the hulk. the movie was crap. hulk needed to be uglier and meaner looking. split screen is annoying. betty has blonde hair in the cartoon- in the film shes a brunnette. they dont show his eyes going green as in the tv series. story is crap. ending is crap. the dogs that attack him look like something from the mask. bruce banner looks like a muppet/geek.

apart from that... they did get right that the hulk gets bigger as he gets angrier and that he can jump huge distances. also there was a hulk smash in there. oh and a cameo by lou as a security guard.

4/10 only because i like the hulk. if i didnt like the hulk then it would be a 1 or a 2/10.

Yeah the hulk film was dire and I hope fantastic 4 is good, the trailers look it but so did the hulks, i think there are maybe too many superhero films coming out atm and it is ruining them, On a plus not i saw city of god the other day and it was good, 8/10 imo a very different film but hard hitting, glad i dont live there

20-02-2005, 09:31
I'm a massive superhero fan and was disappointed by a lot of the the things you mentioned Block, but the Hulk (note - THE Hulk, not just Hulk) escaping from the desert facility and punching a helicopter in the face (if helicopters had faces) was quality. Didn't like Spiderman 1 that much, 2 was much better. X-Men was quite entertaining but not great (sequel was better), same with Daredevil. Punisher was God-awful - preferred the original. Spawn was pants, though did have Michael Jai White in who is truly awesome. The original Batman was excellent, then the series got progressively worse, though I have high hopes for the prequel. Electra was vaguely rescued only because of Jennifer Garner's ass and a cameo from Bob The Beast Sapp and that was about it.

Please can some company start making decent Superhero films? There's such an excellent base already been made for them. I don't see why they can't just use a successful storyline from one of their cartoons/comics as they already own the copyright to them. Aaaargh!

Rant over (for the minute).

Forgot the Blade films. 1 - Very good, except for the dodgy effects of Stephen Dorff being pulled back together and the whole Vampire exploding juice he used. Bit crap that. 2 - more naff effects but pretty good fun I suppose. 3 - The supposed hardest vampire ever was really crap and spent half the film running away from Blade, which was stupid. Blade's sidekick trying to be funny really didn't work and seemed a little ridiculous. HHH's body slam made me laugh, Jessica Biel is stunning. 1 Good, 2 OK, 3 OK.

Rayza, do you have a link :047:lol :D Sorry, I don't. But I downloaded it off Kazaa, it is easily available but you'll need a fairly fast connection as it is 150Mb.

Although I don't have it anymore, I stopped that vice a while back. But it is still to this day the most arousing movie I have ever seen. It's kinda funny at the end cos they did some computer animation of her squirting that looks so fake but I think it was made over 5 years ago. You won't be disappointed.

Wow, I'd never have guessed you liked them! Agreed though, they are very cool; hope they make a prequel about how Wolverine was created, fighting with and falling out with Sabretooth in Project A etc, though as they didn't recognise each other in the first X-Men film, it's a little unlikely :012: .

Spiderman has been made pretty girly in the films, mostly because Tobey Maguire is about as big as my left testicle and looks like he doesn't even shave yet. He was better in the cartoons and comics, though still enjoyed the films.

x-men - obviously it would have to be baldy trekkie stewrat to play prof.xavier.

a general observation - they all needed to be beefed up a bit to fit the superhero bill. the women were ok in that they dont need to be muscular.

rogue's too young and cant fly.
cyclops is a geek.
sabretooth was stupid.
magnito was an old man.
not enough different x-men.

but with all that it was still better than the hulk.

a shaky 5/10. not worth watching again.

brotherhood of the wolf.

based on a true story. really really slow for the first hour or thereabouts. too slow. then it picks up. is dubbed so the voices sound funny. ending is sort of ok as its faster paced and things happen but thats like the last 45 mins or so.

everyones in costume so its a bit happy (think of an appropriate synonym)

if you like monica belluci then its maybe worth a watch. but only if you're mad about her. otherwise its a really crap film. really crap.

3/10.

if you're a monica belluci fan then bump it upto 5/10.

but still crap. you have been warned.

Very unlike me, I saw 2 films last week.

Oceans 12 and Saw.

Oceans 12 made me want to rob a bank, and seriously consider robbing the shop where I work. I am still considering it.

Verdict: Dangerous.

Saw was total bullshit. The police guy could of shot that **** a million times and he still managed to **** things up, personally I would of beat him to death in the first fight scene, but thats just me. Also, the guy who sawed his own ****ing foot off to answer a stinking mobile phone that was out of reach could of taken off his t-shirt to get it. But the ****ing moron didn't think of that.

Verdict: Gay.

Most of those are pretty shifty in my eyes....tell you what is good though...."Dont be a menace to society whilst drinking your juice in the hood"

Its a spoof of all of the above by the "scary movie" guys and is a fcuking pisser. "How High" is alright too.

collateral - its ok. has a plot, with one or 2 unexpected bits. i knew who the last victim was going to be after the opening of the film so that was really too predictable. the taxi driver should have been shot dead a long time ago. the actor did however play the role very well.

was happy the cop got shot. the last hit should have got killed also.

tom cruise was amusing in the role. he did ok.

Pitch Black

Been out for ages and I saw it when it first came out but watched it again and really loved it. Riddick (Vin Diesel) is such a cool character, and I think he came off a lot better in this than Chronicles (sequel), which was a shame, though I hear their making more. Good sci-fi, good effects, good characters and they didn't mind killing them off, so it was very enjoyable.

How does it ruin the original Predator story? I was pretty disappointed in AVP but as far as I remember it kept to the story.

It claims that many years ago the Preds were our masters, and that we were bred just to produce aliens for them to hunt right?

Well in Pred isnt it that we are the only things left that he (cos u only know about 1 of them in Pred) hasnt hunted and killed? Surely if they were our ancient masters they'd have had a crack at hunting us by now!

666
15-03-2005, 22:07
I think it was that one particular predator that hadn't hunted humans before. I read all the books when I was younger and the AVP film does actually follow the general background pretty well. If you've seen Predator 2, it says that they come to hunt us in particularly hot summers, so they had definitely come before as a species.

many good movies mentioned here, i especially liked Dead Mans Shoes, that was truly much better than i anticipated.

if you like that style of acting and the "real life" feeling what goes through the movie, you might like this one:

Sweet sixteen:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0313670/

Fantastic movie. Directed by Ken Loach, and his style shows. All dialogue and acting is very unpolished, unrestricted and immediate - just like real life. Too often in movies the characters talk in such deliberate way according to a poetic script, but in Loaches films, and in this one particular, the actors feel like they have been thrown in to the set and act from their guts.

I liked the storyline as well, its about a kid just 15 years old from poor glasgow area trying to build a future for himself. His mom is in prison and his dad is very abusive (if that guy was his real dad, i never quite understood). He builds his dream future on his idea of what his mom will be like when she gets out, and thats the only chance he gives to himself.

Anyways, the movie should have had subtitles, because the glasgow accent can't really be counted as english! I must have missed ****ing half of it :D

highly recommended!

Ring One (the jap version) is pretty goddam unnerving. I watched it with a rugged mate of mine at about 3am. We both grudgingly admitted in the morning that we had been in fact a bit scared of going home in the dark :(

However, i saw that "Grudge" the other day...made my bird jump, but its like sort of similar to the Jap Ring (i ant seen the Yank 'un) but a lot of the times when that scary little boy jumped out and made that burp noise i was laughin not filling me kegs :017:

I've got a fairly might hored of weapons and training weapons: those two swords, steel nunchukas, three throwing knives, a hunting knife, one and a half suburi (broke one :045: ), katana length bokken, wakizashi length bokken, a shinai... that's just about it I think :027: Can't be too careful with home protection these days!

I like to think so! I've only owned my own house for a few months so I'm still getting up in the night when I hear noises and taking a hunting knife and short sword with me - if there ever is anyone there I'll be quite amused to see their face as an 18 stone lad with two blades leaps on them!

Unless they just shoot me. :022:

Yeah, low end ones but they tend to be too garish. Is that shinai for Kendo?

666
08-04-2005, 12:38
Yep. I don't compete but I do train - or used to before I moved. I'm going to try and still train with a pal in the summer. Getting whacked with a shinai really doesn't hurt much so they're great for training if you can't afford all the kit, but drilling with the suburi rocks.

9th Gate. flippin waste of time. meant to be some sort of supernatural type film. turned out to be supercrap. ending was crap. and left me confused asto what actually happened in the film. too many gaps. dont watch it unless you are asleep.

1/10 for the occasional humour.

The Punisher - Not bad, bit of action, not like the old action films though.

Man on Fire - Very good, over 2 hours long, time flew by.

Gladiator - Still excellent, must admit I skipped to the fights.

man on fire... i thought it wasnt all that. probably because i was watching it with with 2 very cynical friends.

control - ray liotta. about a man on death row who is given a 2nd chance aslong as he is a guinea pig for some new anti-aggression drugs. blah blah blah...
starts off well. thought it would be brilliant then it starts sputtering and turns into more of an emotional journey rather than the mindless violence it initially set out to be. end was disappointing - i thought it finished early.
6/10

l.a. confidential - very good. few twists. good story. long though. russell crowe was very good. 9/10

Equilibrium: Christian Bale in futuristic cleric mode, in a world where you get shot for having emotions...a little bit matrix-y but still 7/10

The Interpreter: Nicole Kidman is fit but tall. 6/10

From what i read the only thing it will have in common with the book will be the title as the carlos the jackal character will not be featured in it, they see that character as an outdated cold war storie or something

Well there's hardly anything in the first two that have got much to do with the original! I normally get pissed off when they do that, but I don't mind with this - the books are cool and the films are cool, so I can just enjoy them separately. Awesome fight in Supremacy in the house - a proper real-life fight, very Krav Maga / Systema sort of scrap. Top stuff.

lee priest training camp.

this was highly amusing. to be fair lee actually seems like an alright guy. he doesnt love machines but uses them due to injuries blah blah blah. the transformation he goes through offpeak and competition season is amazing. when i saw this fat looking lard talking and training i couldnt believe it was the same guy. he is HHUUUGGGEEE off peak. he has a fantastic physique. i want to be a bodybuilder now :016:

it was funny seeing the guys in the gym licking his ass. oh and there was a guy with a t shirt with the solitary word PUMP written across it in big writing.

bodybuilders still seem gay to me with all the fake tan that even the blackest of bodybuilders plaster on themselves and the teeny weeny g-strings they wear, but i admire the dedication and hard work they put in.

inspirational in a gay sort of way. worth a watch but not exactly enlightening.
