View Full Version : Experiences with cortisone injections/shoulder impingements?
I am going to get one done because I've had a shoulder injury for the last five months nearly and it is believed that it is a bursitus/impingement problem with no actual structural damage at all. I've tried swimming, lengthening the muscles, strengthening the muscles, total rest and avoiding all activities which annoy the area such as writing and typing (I've invested in voice recognition software and learnt to write with my other hand!)
Any experiences with either shoulder impingements or cortisone injections?
Thanks lads I really appreciate any feed back

Anti-inflammatory.
impingement is wear and tear of the supraspinatus from OH work
bursitis is inflammation of the bursa that lies above the SSp near the acromonium
do you know what one it is?
if it is bursitis they can drain it for you, if its impingment i would get the cortisone, rest it completely (i recommend wearing a sling for much of the day) and keep you arms by your side whenever possible
when the pain has gone away start strengthening it up slowly

Cortisone is a steroid (corticosteroid) and will help reduce inflammation.
However, steroid injections into/around the joint have varied efficacy. Sometimes theres good pain relief for a number of months, sometimes there is no effect at all.
Its worth a try, it might be a bit painful but you've nothing to lose. The best thing would be plenty of rest and NSAIDs. Surgery is a final option, but may reduce the ROM depending on what is done.

I'm fairly sure it is bursitis as being confirmed by the physio, and get pain around the end of the acromonium clavicular, anterior delt, s.spinatus and surrounding area
For some reason she just sent me on my way after telling me what was wrong and just told me not to do anything that hurts:(
I've done some band exercises and strengthened the shoulder, increased range of motion and flexibility, but it seems as bad as it did months ago!
It's being six months nearly now and I am sick to death of being ignored when this has affected my life so badly to the pointwhere I can't type or write by hand, can't work, and can't train.
I've had an x-ray done which shows no abnormal bone formation
help, you know the procedure of draining the bursitis?
iv looked into it for a friend
if its bursitis they generally just give the cortisone shot and tell you to rest. If its impingement they might even scan it (think an ultrasound or MRI) and operate to give more space AFTER some cosrtisone doesnt work
I think the draining is a last attempt after the cortisone but im not 100%
