This on top of your regular journal?
The gripper stuff doesn't really mean anything to me but looking forward to seeing pinching and axle stuff if you've got that in mind too.
Yeah, I figured I'd keep a grip journal seperate since the grip work is more regular and will drown out my barbell training.
I haven't used the axle in a while minus the one hand suitcase deads which I performed recently which raped my forearms. I'm keeping it to a minimum since I've noted that my crushing strength is a lot more effective if I keep the axle work to an minimum.
Whilst performing those suitcase deads I discovered there was zero carryover from crush to support grip (bar) strength. I wasn't expecting much, though maybe a little...
Pinch wise I'm still struggling to one hand pinch two 20kg's so that the goal for the pinch.
Crush wise, I'm shooting for the Level 12 CCS.
Cool journal
Like 666, the gripper stuff doesn't mean much to me either, but I think once I read this journal a few times I'll probably end up getting a vulcan.
With the pinch grip, have you tried one hand pinching 2x15's or 3x10's first? If you haven't then maybe you should set your sights on these goals first before attempting 2x20's. If you've managed 2x15's, then you could try adding weight to them using a scaffold pole and collars, I would imagine that when you can one hand pinch about 35kg then 2x20's shouldn't be be hard as 15's are thicker plates iirc.
I'm not far off pinching 3 10kg plates but I'll won't know for sure until they leave the ground. The 10kg plates I have at the moment are standard Yorks which don't sit flush during the pinch.
I reckon I might even fare well with the 2 x 20kg on scaffold since you don't have to put in the extra to hold them together.
could i suggest a grip forum??
then that could be subbed into any other branches necessary,
general / journals etc..
It's a good idea in my opinion though I'm bias being interested in grip.
It's got the potential to draw in more folk too provided word gets around.
nice journal, yeah and i also think a grip forum would be good here!!

doesnt look too bad.
i find grip very inconsistent myself, sometimes it goes good and sometimes it goes bloody awful.
get the forum going then!! :039:
Yeah. it happens. As mentioned with Sam it depends on my effort in regular training. This grip session was performed in-session. I ramped up a little differently too. My hand just give way on the Level 12 though, It was miles off and I've close it no probs in the past.
I done some 100kg / 110kg one hand deads yetserday too which might be a contributing factor.
The grip forum isn't my call. It's up to PK.

Thick bar / too much supporting grip work fry the crush for DAYS! For me farmers are the worst, my grippers are way down afterwards.
Oh, those were just oly bar One hand DL's.
I learned the hard way last week when my grip suffered for two days after axle one hand deads! :045:
Cheers Rob!
Are you getting back in on the thickbar? ;)
Not yet old dog. I live in a flat(/hotel) so I can't really do all that much at home as far as heavy bars are concerned.
I just like sitting in the office eating non stop salmon doing 000's of reps with Argos grippers all day. LOL
Will be nail bending soon.
I'm house hunting at the moment and I seem to be basing every choice and opinion around training. I see a backyard, I see a training ground. I see a field nearby, I see farmers walk space. All upstrairs apartments / flats have been rejected. :033:

The increased focus in the left hand using the Vulcan in the past week has paid off.
Previously (a mere few weeks ago) was only able to bring the CoC#2 to parallel with my left hand. It was as distant as the #3 used to be with my right.
Given that I'm feeling realtively weak, I'm happy with the CoC#3 work too.
Richard Sorin (of all people) posted on the Gripboard recently praising the gripper keyrings only to discover it's yet another product they've censored. :044:
Good work closing the #3 and the #2 lefty.
Richard Sorin is a sponsor so it is ok - he is distributing this product. ;)

Do you mean 3mm miss? Next session drop back to level 10 and do multiple singles (5-6) CCS and stick with that for a few days then level 11 3-4 singles next week then 2 days rest and try level 12 again you'll kill it.
I wish I did. It was a bad session. 3cm off.
It sounds like a plan. I need to master the CCS with a decent resistance instead of just using the card for the challenge set.
Congrats on the #2 close mate. I'm a smudge off parallel with mine - what do you reckon that would translate to rep-wise on a #1 or a trainer? Considering one for bashing a few reps out.
Thanks!
I'm not sure in all honesty. I'm not sure it even works that way. I could rep the #2 metal to metal for 13 whilst I was still at parallel with the #3.
buy one from me ian and youll find out ;)
£13 including postage... go on.
Super maximal work with the CCS has never worked for me. I trained for the ironmind cert using my easiest #3 for loads of singles CCS and was able to close the harder brand new one on the day. Now i'm training for the #3.5 cert and doing singles with a harder #3. I'll then move up to the elite (a little under a #3.5). When i can CCS the elite for 10 singles i'll feel ready to certify. Half the issue with CCS is the technique i think it is really important to put in where it feels best in your hand and the best way to do this is loads of singles, with a nice overcrush. Give the higher volume a shot, that will grease the groove for you nicely and you'll be overcrushing level 12 soon.
So train grip again saturday (take a rest day tomorrow if you felt weak today) and do this:
VULCAN
warmups
level 10 CCS 6 singles. all easy. overcrush for 2-3 secs.
For the LH same but with level 5-6.
Still throw in a bit of deeper set work to work the close when you feel you need it. Say twice a week after your CCS work do a few deep set closes with the vulcan on level 11.

I haven't closed my HG300 yet. I'm about a cm off.
lol, its funny the difference in those grippers. the 400 i wouldve thought alot harder than the 300 and obviously given our difference in the vulcan, my 300 is alot easier than yours.
liking the logo on your vid too mate, i need me one of them for slothtube, lol.
Yeah, as me and Sam discussed there's a lot of variance and a massive difference between old and new batches of HG's and the 400 and 500 are kind of external to the range since they are a different size.
The 400 has a chunky spring that's actually a bit bigger than the 350 spring but the longer heavy handles provide a lot more leverage.

good work mate! next time go for 6-7 singles level 11. You could also use bands to microload your way up to level 12.
Yeah I just remembered the band microload yesterday.
I'll be using them next session.
i'm trying to up my gripper work. I can close a 2 in my RH and get a 1 to parallel with my LH despite my injured wrist. However the main difficulty is getting them back from my daughter who uses the handles as a teething toy
ouch! those teeth must be giving some super grief.
if anything chris, with regular grippers i've always found long holds and low reps with short holds work the best.

nice, i cant CCS anything, think my hands are too small.
Don't worry. For some it's an acquired skill. It certainly was for me and others have reported similar. There's a knack to it and a whole new level of adaption that needs to take place.
First I got used to the wide spread with regular crushes (a set using the other hand and a crush in one fluid motion), then I dabbled in the CCS.
I still don't particularly like the CCS but it's a rough method of keeping things fair. It's not advantageous for those with very small hands but I'd just make the most of what you have and keep gripping. Randall Strossen is the man to blame.
Good work with the vulcan. I still don't get how you can fail a close by 2mm and then by 3cm on one of the later singles!!!! Sloth CCS takes a while to get the hang of. Practice with a #2 or HG250 to start with!
The 3cm miss was just a case of slippage in the palm after inserting the card.

With regards to the 2x20 one hand pinch lift, do you have anything lighter you can train with to build up some strength for it, maybe two 15's or a pinch block or something?
I experimented with some paving slabs in that session, which depsite being lighter are still too heavy to lift from the ground.
I'm going to score and split some paving slabs soon so I can grab one and a half and so forth until I get a pinch setup.
Another thing you could do is pinch your 2x20kg and slide them on a sheet of formica or something. Start off with it flat and from session to session you gradually lift one side of the formica so it becomes steeper each time. This was a tip that David Horne gave me, but I've not experminated with it properly yet.
ah, incline pinch lifts!
Bloody good idea! :023:

Maybe. There's probably loads of different factors which contribute.

CCS can be a frustrating thing - i like this article about it that Teemu I wrote. He is the world's best when it comes to wide sets, and has closed a #4 with a deep set.
Teemu I article (http://gripperstrength.wordpress.com/2008/05/14/credit-card-set-%E2%80%93-a-recent-trend/)
Indeed!
Some good points raised in that article. Despite it being a pain in the arse though I do find there's a significant difference between torsion spring and vulcan CCS due to the wider spread. I'm almost certain there's an all new angle of strength (not just an "endurance") to be had from working it.
With that said though, I think I'm going to be doing CCS less since I want to be able to reap the benefits from the non-css method too.

Came to the realization that treating the left hand as an afterthought is insane so it's being subject to the same CCS work as my right which seen huge progress. This should have been done a while ago but got too carried away with dominant hand work for certification.

Yesterday:
I'm not exactly sure how 2 weeks has past since my last grip journal entry.
On the positive side it's given me time to ease up for my RB certification having just recieved the cert set from Thorsten. I was hoping to do the cert last night but it appears my ruler has gone AWOL for the 100th time and someone has taken the tape measure.
In the meantime I've experimented with the TNS requirement and although I was hoping to close the 260 I'm half a centimetre shy from even closing the 240. It's fortunate that Thorsten insisted I had the full set sent to me. Additionally I've had a crack at some standard closes on these very grippers.
I'll be certing TNS on Monday or Tuesday.

Sam, take a look at the RB330 cert gripper spread in comparison to my RB330 Brass.
The difficulty difference between each is HUGE. Spring tension too. I'm not even sure I could close the brass with a chest crush whereas I'm a mere 1mm off closing the Cert 330 with a standard set.
Are the cert grippers made to a narrower spread for the sake of the TNS requirement?
Or, is the brass RB330 adjusted to compensate for the extra leverage (to no avail) coming from the heavier brass handles?
When I reffered to the people who certified on the RB330 TNS as having superhuman strength I had my RB330 brass in mind (before I recieved the cert grippers) however now I can see the 330 TNS being entirely do-able for those with I little more strength than myself. Within your reach I reckon :023:
So how does certification work then?
Grippers are sent from Germany to the applicant. I was fortunate enough to get the full set.
To certify you video the bottom of the handles, pick up the gripper and crush with one hand unnassisted, show the closed handles and place down to confirm legit spread of the handles.

how do those thumbscrew things compare to plate pinching mate? that'd be alot more suitable for training pinch at my new gaff.
how much?
There's less surface area covered since the palm doesn't make contact with anything and the dominant fingers do most of the work. That's the difference though I'm unsure if these are postives or negatives. It's definately the best solution for doing pinches at home if you don't want chalked up plates crashing around. That's why I bought them.

I've scrapped the use of the HG100 with the thumbscrews for now and chose to use the trusted Vulcan with bands to microload and measure progress more effectively aiming for metal to metal closures in every rep.
The blue band is currently set at the 1st divot and will be moved to the 2nd in the next pinch session since metal to metal was achieved in every rep today. The red band will remain a fixture in the same divot position until the blue meets it.
