Keep meaning to ask you guys this:

I was talking to some judo guys at a demo once, and asked them how they trained for grip strength. They said that they throw their uniform jacket over a chin bar, then grip only the jacket and do pullups. Anyone ever tried this?

They're sometimes called towel pull ups. I used to do them instead of chins but my grip always gave way before I finished the set (3x8 I think) and they gave my forearms a good pump. It's hardest when you change direction at the bottom of each rep.

its depends what you mean by good grip?

if you want a strong grip so you can grab onto someone effectively when grappling then i think towel pullups would be great

add in some lever work for the wrists too and your sorted

What is it about gripping a towel when chinning that stresses the grip more than actually doing reverse grip on a chinning bar?

'Cos you use a wider grip with a towel as opposed to a bar, just like a fat bar is much harder to grip compared to and oly one and the force is going in a different direction, perpendicular to your fingers instead of in the same direction as them.

A very underused exercise IMO, they are a fave of mine, back, arms, grip - it's all good.
