I'm going to add a new challenge each month, challenges will be things that everyone should be able to do.
Octobers Challenge is:
Maximum Chin ups, thats underhand, in 3 minutes.
Chin must reach the bar.
On the way down straighten your arms as much as possible.
Minimal Kipping.
Videos not required but prefered as everyones posting vids these days.

What do we reckon will be decent number? Can you rest in the 3 mins?
50+ is awesome, as a guide Martin Rooney can do 43 in 3 minutes. You can rest as much as you like but the time doesn't stop obviously, I'm sure PikeKing will correct me if I've got that wrong!

stop as much as you like, the clock doesnt though obviously, not that i'll be doing it as i'm a cripple but I'd aim for over 30.

I'll have a crack at this on Thursday; don't know what I'll be aiming for. Probably do it in 3s with lots of mini rests.
Yep fatty will give it ago on tuesday, I'm aiming to come last lol. Seriously though 10 - 15 will be my target!

as long as the arms are at full extension is putting the feet on the floor between reps ok? i tend to drop right of the bar inbetween reps sometimes.

well a little twitchy kick wont make much difference really, i mean no crossfit style kipping, the majority of the work to be done with your back

I will be doing this at some stage, I haven't got audio but I take it that video was how not to do it because there was too much leg wiggle going in that vid!

i think the angle of the video doesnt do him any favours, but his form is not great, so to reiterate the fact, your arms need to straighten as much as possible with no kicking from your legs.
its not a big deal though guys, this is for fun, not a competition to see who has the biggest dick

Hmmm, looking back at page one of my journal I managed 50 chins in 8 and a half mins. I'll set myself a target of 25 for now. Gonna give this a bash after tea tonight.

I might give this a go tomorrow if I have time. Won't be able to do any event traing this weekend as I'm going away, so I might try and get a quick session in tomorrow.

These broke down into: 5, 5, 5, 3, 3, 2
Should have been 24 but couldn't complete the last set of 3, pretty lame really.
All done at a BW of 104.5kg in the gym :028: (See Tim, real men can do chins!)
BW 112kg if we're caring about that.

I weighed in at a whopping 75.5kg before embarking on the chin challenge !
I will have a couple more attempts at this to see if I can beat it. I'm not going to kill myself over it though.

Good stuff mate, that is seriously impressive. how did you lay out your sets.
i went 6,6,6,6,6,4,3...aiming for 6 sets of 6, one set every 30 seconds
however ended up going a few seconds early every time, then had a few seconds left over at the end to get the 3 in... bear in mind though my bodyweight was 82.8kg on empty this morning so only around 84kg when i did that...
unfortunately bodyweight stuff is the only thing i am good at weights wise at the moment

Lol, one more than last time. Different tactic - went all out from the start rather than pacing myself (8, 2, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1!). This way hurt more...

you can touch and go
you cant bounce the bar
you cant use straps
you cant drop the bar
you may rest as much as you like but the clock doesnt stop
you must round the weight up if you cant get it exactly on the bar
you must not bitch about the challenge being dangerous, if you do you're a fag

I'm gonna have to make time for this one, though max reps on 75 sounds too much like c****o for my complete lack of fitness...

So for me this is Max reps at 105kg (BW 104kg). I think I'd be happy with 40+ Anyone have any idea what a benchmark for this would be?

this will be an interesting challenge i think, obviously the strength athletes will find the weight easy but will have to dig deep due to cardio demands and the guy doing nasty conditioning circuits will find the weight heavier but probably find the conditioning element no worse than what they are used to.

Yeah - but it's about 35-40% of your max isn't it?
Going by my squat I'd estimate a 210 max or so just now. so yeah it's comparatively little weight, over a minute it would be alright, but 4 is very much cardio... not my strong point.

i've tried to make the challenges different, everyones done the big 3 in forum comps, also tried to make them things that everyone can have a go at.
Also it was never meant to be a competition, jsut something to challenge yourself, do something different, even though I know everyone will be comparing themselves to others.

Right i suck at conventional deadlifts as always smash into my knees etc hence always using a trapbar is this ok as I have never done sumo deadlifts?
If not i will do this conventional way with poor poor form

True, I was thinking about tabata stuff though - 4 mins of tabata is basically a set every 30 seconds, and instead of going "balls out" all you'd be doing is taking 6 steady reps each time....in principle it should work...in practice I'll be piss weak no doubt
I reckon filming the last minute might be quite fun to watch.

Annoyingly there isn't, it's got every other bloody thing except that. Plus this being Switzerland, the land of the expensive ripoff, I can't even nip down Argos and get a shit Casio watch because that would still be about £60.
Will find one tomorrow in town and have a bash at this next time out.
Could try asking the gym first, they might have one to lend you.

Nah I need a watch anyway for when I'm running
41 reps. Tough ! Form was shocking on the last minute, some round back lifting going on ! Sets went like this: 12/10/10/9.
I used 75k, I gaffa taped some standard 2.5's on each end of my bar. If I had used 80k for this I would have been lucky to get 30 I reckon.
I did video my effort but the playback is terrible, really jagged, I think this is due to low battery at the time.
BW was 73.6k today prior to the challenge.

Cheers ! I don't think it will stand for too long, there are some good deadlifters on here. Cardio wise it wasn't that bad, just fatigue in the forearms and lower back.

Cheers Sarah, my lower back is already a little sore now, tomorrow is going to be interesting. High rep stuff always leaves me with hefty DOMS.
50 @ 90kg with trap bar
Sets were as follows 15,8,7,5,5,5,5
Weighed myself before the gym and so was just over 85kg grrrr lol weighed in at 13 stones 7lbs so rounded up to 90kg. Weight wise I was comfortable with it, think going for 15 at the start might have caught up with me but wanted to get a good number of reps on my belt. Really had me breathing heavy half way in and felt absolutely sick at the end and for about 30 mins after too. Reckon I could get more reps but I had 50 in my head at the start and met it but great challenge PK :023:
Oooo, 50 is going to be tough to top I reckon. Especially if I'm pulling 25kg more...

On a side note, my hams are pretty sore today and I have a nice "worked" feeling all over my back especially the lower area.
Tempted to give this challenge another go later in the month to see if I improve, a little effort goes a long way and I think I had more to give, maybe a rep or two.

also just to add, I dont think they will be too disruptive to anyone schedule. I didn't find them too taxing and that was at the end of a squat and deadlift session, it was a bit therapeutic actually, I feel great this morning.

Good man! Annoyingly I weighed myself about 2 minutes before this so was fully fed, well-hydrated and dressed for winter training. Maybe I'll have a more tactical weigh-in next time and be down to 110!

you must round the weight up if you cant get it exactly on the bar

I think 60 is doable I had 50 in mind before starting and as I got closer I stepped off a bit by taking longer breaks, will give it another go later in the month
funny thing was, my cardio found this the hardest, which i wasn't expecting

Yeah but my first attempt was done after not eating anything decent for 6hours, feeling shit and flat and I still made sure I did it. I reckon on a "normal" training day I'd have killed 45 reps, its not like I'm gonna be practising at reps to get better at this!

To me thats like coming 2nd in a race and asking to have another go because you could have done it a bit better. Having said that I do appreciate this isn't a race nor is it meant to be a competition.

Tbh KMP both. My lower back is still a little tight and whe we train strongman on sundays were normally only going for up to 90 seconds at a time, its normally harder work but having to go for 4 mintues felt like a life time lol.

1st dead lifts in months 87.5 kg did 43 in 3:50 total, 20 in the 1st mins then things slowed down hurt like ****, expected 50+ but it certainly gets tough after the 2nd min
