Gents,

need a few measurements / tips for some homemade SM stuff I'm putting together (I know this is probably available on SDF but that HAS to be the most un-user friendly forum out there) So I need:

Log Diameter / Measurements: I actually have a genuine log - as in piece of wood that I'm gonna turn into something similar to this (http://www.slatershardware.com/Truelogs.html)

Kegs: Phil I know you pilfered yours but has anyone any suggestions on where I may get some? Also, what do you fill em with (Water, sand, or concrete?) and how do you figure out how much they weight once this is done?

Axle: Are most axles the same spec as oly bars? If so I'm sorted, if not could someone post collar to collar width etc?

Cheers guys.

kegs - ask a pub nicely, if you have a friendly local landlord he might be ok with you having one. I assume your local trendy chain pub/bar would be less accomadating. Pikeking recommended to me a real ale kind with a bung rather than a pressurized lager one as its easier to empty and fill.

If you are filling with water or sand you could measure the empty keg and then record how much you fill it with. I'm not sure how you would measure concrete.

To make your log, you could get some measurements from pkpit. He will probably still have that drawing he did for me of the log trainer, if not I still have it and could send it to you if you want.

Try asking around the local pubs/clubs if they have any spare kegs lying around. But I doubt they’ll give it to you for free, as they have to pay a deposit to the brewery. But you could ask if they’d be willing to sell you one. Mine is filled with gravel and water. It started off at 75kg and now it’s up to 100kg at the moment. Weighed it with bathroom scales.

All I’ve done with my axle is cut a 7ft piece of scaffold and measure my oly bar to find out where to place the collars (Think it’s around 15 inches from the outside). I’ve also made two markings on the bar, so I know where to hold on to, to ensure I have the correct hand positioning before lifting.

dude you live in the country, find an abandoned pub and rob the ****s.
use scales to measure the weight.

axle - piece of scaff, measure in a given length the same from each end and set some collars there, thats it. i just sorted me one out yesterday. prob is tyre holes are too big so gona have to get some adapters from mr horne.

Aled any questions just send a private message to Tom (user name Viking Power) on SDF, explain the Devon boys suggested speaking to him, he too is a devon boy. Tom use to make some awesome kit used all over the country and probably europe, he did even set up business in it until a while ago when he packed it up due to people not paying hm on time. He is very approachable, friendly, and above all will give you all the support you need. His odd shitty comments on SDF are a front, you wouldn't beleive it was the same guy if you met him.

You could always pm Allan on devonstrongman

How did you manage that?
Where will you train with your tyre then? Garden, road? I would love a tyre, but my parents dont wan't one around the garden:(

If you don't have success with your log, you could always buy one from here

http://www.davidhorne-gripmaster.com/worldofstrengthshop.html

Some other goodies on there as well.

I think the place is in Stafford. Is that far from you?

They were found as part of a river clean up we were doing, I have one standard size keg and two huge one's which god only knows what they'll weigh once filled, I may have to be conservative and fill these with sand and/or water due to size. The smaller one I think I'll fill it with concrete. Tyre will be used at home on the farm - plenty of room.

That David Horne stuff looks top notch and is about 40mins drive away but is out of my price range at the moment, its all about homemade equipment anyways!

As above hopefully.

Yep, I was referring to that - wondering if you were doing it yourself and if you were, how you're going to get hold of the handles and end plates and how long you reckon it'll take you to do it all.

ATZ
06-06-2008, 10:59
Handles - already have them (not as pictured above) just two bars which I'm going to sink into the wood and resin into place. End plates/loading pins I'm going to get knocked up by a mate who's a welder (he welded dome collars onto a thickbar to make my axle), he'll be using two short pieces of scaffold welded to square plates as its chaper.

That's going to be a sweet bit of kit. Sounds like a good little cottage industry!

On a much less grander scale than the log (unfortunately), I did a few home-made things this weekend. Who would have thought tape and steel balls could be so useful!

Just picked up a cheap swiss-ball from tesco's. As I have a weekend to myself this upcoming one I'm gonna have a go at making my own Atlas stone. Pics to follow!

good luck mate. dales got one made from a mould like that. makes sure you try and fill it in one go. with his you can see where the person who made it, made it in stages, and it looks very week at each of these points.

Err, it appears I've been a bit over zealous in my choice of swiss ball for a atlas stone mould...

I have a 65cm or 25.59" ball. By my own calculations if I made an atlas stone this size it would weigh anywhere between 670 - 744lb going on concrete being between 126 - 140lb per cubic foot!!! <buff> I will be returning this ball!

So, I have figured out to make a ball of more managable size I'm gonna need a 45cm Swiss ball as my mould, this should provide me with an Atlas stone around the 100kg mark. Only problem being is that tesco's don't sell a 45 cm swiss ball and the cheapest I've found online is £12 delivered. Any thoughts on a cheaper solution for my mould cast chaps? Could other balls be over-inflated to the required size?

100kg is too light man, 120 would be much more useable.

ATZ
10-06-2008, 16:02
100kg if I just fill it with concrete, gonna make a heavier one if this first attempt is successful.

Didn't get chance too as I'm still waiting for my swiss ball off ebay. Although I may have found a chap 10 minutes down the road from me who'll make me one - he makes decoritive stone globes for gate posts etc so I'm gonna have a chat with him tomorrow and see what he can sort me out. If that falls through I'm making one this coming weekend.

Did you get the adapters?

I'm going to invest on some 1inch adapters from Dave to get some wheels loaded onto my axle.

I'm wondering by the looks of them theres quite a long sleeve on them so to prevent having a gap the tyre will have to go on last near the end of the bar, which means having to take them off in to load more plates?

Sloth
09-02-2009, 09:25
no i didnt mate. aint had the money tbh. though might be a good idea now im practicing more OL.

666
09-02-2009, 16:35
How big's a wheel hole then? I'd thought they were 2" for some reason.

webcore
09-02-2009, 17:01
I did too, but apparently theres a good few variations.

This also applies to the wheel fitting itself (I'm a non driver so I don't know much about these things!) hence why Dave Horne asks for wax rubings of the wheel to have the adaptors fabricated to the exact requirements.

ATZ
09-02-2009, 17:12
These are wholly unecessary if you shop around for your wheels. The ones I have sport a 2" hole and fit both my oly bar and scaff.

webcore
09-02-2009, 19:32
My axle is a rare breed. Unfortunately I need the (1inch) adapters.

ATZ
09-02-2009, 21:39
Ahh, I see. In that case I'd imagine the adapters allow the bar to pass straight through so that you didn't need to pull the wheels on and off for weight changes.
