... I have been told by the physio that because of the nature of my injury I may not be able to squat heavy again:022: :022: :022:
I felt like bursting into tears when she said it, but she reassured me that I can still be a distance runner, rower, and a load of other things that I have no interest in:023:

she reckons I should try some light weight training (no squats) with high reps to see how I get on I think, that includes upperbody work

I'm so down at the moment... Even with my happy pills!

Did she give you a reason for you not squatting? Did she rule out all lower body stuff?

She said something about abnormal bone growth and if the patella tendon comes under heavy load it rubs against the tubercle or something.

I don't know the severity of it all, only time will tell and she didn't seem too keen on the doing any form of heavy weight training either (apparently I don't have the right frame for it), but she can blow that one out her asshole!

I don't really feel up to training upper body yet, not even lightly and will spend some more time strengthening the shoulder with and swimming and band exercises

I have found this: http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/fact/thr_report.cfm?Thread_ID=145&topcategory=KneeI don't know what she is on about, I don't think things are as dramatic and serious as she made out. I guess I will just have to go a year or two without proper leg training

I think a lot of the time they say these things to have you prepared for the worst
You always hear stories of people who were told they'd never be able to do this, or never be able to do that , and yet go on to actually excel at those very tasks

I am not saying ignore your medical advice - just don't write yourself off on someone elses judgement , even if they are a medical professional !

at least your back, squat isnt everything, if you have to use machines and cables to make your legs grow, so be it! & welcome back!

i agree with matt. sometimes professionals say these things to prepare you for the worst. follow her advice and see how it goes, perhaps after awhile you'll be able to squat again.
