I`ve started back training in bjj & was wondering can someone help me sort out a routine for s & c please.
I have the following bits of kit available to me :

Any thoughts would be really welcomed.

Yeah, funnily enough I've noticed your competitive streak once or twice! :)
Ok mate will do, or you could always give one to Al tomorrow and bring one yourself on Sunday, that way at least one of you has to remember!
Well,my first thought would be that I'd suggest some form of anaerobic conditionning as well as building a core of aerobic conditionning.I dont know what your background is TAT 70 or how much BJJ you have done but I find that grappling goes in peaks and troughs and you have very very intense work periods followed by a let up,simply because you cannot sustain that pace indefinitaly.(shit my spelling sucks tonight!!)
I have found that Tabatas/HIIT have a carry over to grappling training but the best thing for grappling is...to grapple...what I play with is I will have a coupla training partners and we will select a position to play from(guard/mount/whatever) and I will do say 3 mins in that position and they can change around at any time.Say person b comes in after 25 secs then they switch again.They get a breather and I have to keep working hard all the time.
Looking at the equipment you have available there seems to be lottsa choices there for good things to play with and things you can do.
Another suggestion-burpees,burpees and more burpees.Great for conditionning.
And maybe get Esther/Kinky in on this too as she works out with BJJ guys and girls all the time?
And tat 70 if you drop me a pm with your address I probably have a lot of books that I can burn to disc and send if you want....

Alex and Andy again are good choices and you might want to check out a magazine called "Fighters Only".That has some good training articles in it relevant to Grappling/MMA/BJJ....I have a sneaky feeling that there might even be someone on here he might know something about that.....right Alex?
Tone my level of skill is not so good at the moment mate.
I`ve come from a strongishman back ground.
I train bjj 2 times a wk then on a sun we have an open matt.
When we train we do a fair bit oif sparring the way you`ve suggested.
I`ll start burpees 2morrow morn mate.
I`m open to any theories or templates for training.

how many times do you think you can workout along with your BJJ?

once?
thats the first question, obvioulsy you can periodise in different ways, do u do strength day and a conditioning/DE/Reps day or you could do 4 week blocks focusing on different things. I've gone off the conjugate periodisation now, when i get healthy i intend to do 4 weeks blocks, that works even better if you have a comp date.
so theres some things to think about without even thinking about exercise choice.

Sorry, can't write much now because in the middle of making dinner.
Your S&C for BJJ really depends on lots of factors, where your weaknesses are, what you need to bring up, the time scale you have etc. Its probably best to work our which comps you want to do then plan your training in phases around comps.
I've found it useful to class training into:
1. Technical Physical Preparedness (TPP) - techniques, drills etc.
2. Specific Physical Preparedness (SPP) - sparring.
3. General Physical Preparedness (GPP) - weights, conditioning etc.
Vary the amount of each depending on where you are in your cycle, e.g. if you're between comps and some way out you might want to do lots of heavy weights (if you think you're weak) and TPP but reduce the amount of SPP as it eats into recovery. Coming closer to a comp you'd want to reduce strength sessions so you're doing enough to maintain strength while you focus more on SPP and ESD.
Having said that, if you train for strongman you're probably a lot stronger than most of the other guys and will make most gains just going to BJJ classes and getting better at BJJ.

How you train depends how far out from a fight you are, if you are planning to fight. Lots of things from strongman will carry over well though - grip, posterior chain strength, explosiveness, anaerobic capacity etc.
I really need to find out what exercises are best for cardio &
conditioning ?

ok to keep it simple
do 1 strongman/or traditonal gym strength day and 1 nasty conditoning day per week, after talking to Narc I think this is what you want.
on the strength day, just do what you've been doing as its obviously worked.
conditoning day try this for starters:
Burpee x 15
Horizonal Pull x 15 (chest must hit bar)
Freestyle OHP x 15 with say 45kg
do 3 times, for time.
ok to keep it simple

ooops thats meant to say horizontal pull ups, so hang under a bar in a rack or something and pull your chest to it, i suppose technically its a row.
freestyle OHP means u can do whatever u want to get it overhead, strict press, push press, jerk it, whatever and i was thinking of a bar but u can use anything

Yep ,but its one thing being strong,its another being able to utilise that strength or converting it into power when sparring.Ask Andy how he felt when he began grappling.He is a lot stronger than me on all the weights(******!!But I am not injured as much as him so it evens out!! :023: )He was often blowing out of his arse and kept trying to push/throw me off but I can deal with that....but he is now combining strength with technique and life is gonna get harder for me rather rapidly..
Its a different sort of strength,you need to know when you need to apply force or power if that makes sense?Its not like just picking up a barbell,you need to be able to understand when you lift that barbell too.Plus you could be needing to exert maximum strength over and over without a break between sets.As Bruce Lee coulda said "Weights don't hit back".
Plus you gotta throw the anaerobic and aerobic conditionning in there.If you can go full bore for 30 secs that is great but it is a bit of a pain if the other guy has riden out your best effort and you are too f***** to be able to fight after that...
Hopefully Tat/Pike/Kinky can relate...
Oh god yeah I understand that completely. What I was saying is that Will is a strong chap, even if he lost a shitload of strength he would still be stronger than most people he'd be fighting, so he shouldn't need to worry at all about that side of things for his BJJ really. .

Yeah, I think we're both trying to make the same point to each other, lol. I don't think strength is massively important, least of all gym type strength, in combat sports. As Will is already strong, it's probably even less important to him. Of course, while I know a few things about strength training, I now shit all about fighting training, and you do, which is why I directed Will here in the first place, so I should probably just STFU :)

Yea you are right about TAT being a strong guy.A very strong guy.But as he(and you) is aware it is about the utilisation of that strength and converting it into power against other people and being able to keep doing it.When he is able to tie up the strength he has developed with technique and conditionning,well its "oh shit " time for anyone facing him.

I was absolutely shagged 2night.Only stayed for technique training,
was far too achey & tired to spar (i know poof).
I had very little sleep last ,had to do a 100odd mile round trip
for work which envolved driving in monsoon conditions.
Got home & had to clear garage out so i can get my arse
in gear & get fit .Normally wouldn`t be a problem but i`ve
got about 300k of lead rolls in my garage that i had to move
up to my house :037: (which is up a fair few steps).

events & keep my hand in on the strongman scene.You

Had to get workmate to drive home as i couldn`t
keep my eyes open.

At 2 kilos out just drop some water. If you're weighing first thing you will have to actually do something, if not see what you are when you wake up, I normally lose over a kilo overnight just breathing/drooling :cool:

Thinking about it, my pillows must be almost entirely made of drool what with the frequency I change my bedding....
2k is child play for 2 weeks, last time i cut weight for comp, I dropped from 99k to 90k in 2 weeks, though I was way fooked by lifting time :D
for 2k, I wouldnt even bother to diet as that might affect strength, just keep things normal and drop it in the last 12hrs as the quicker you lose it, the quicker it will come back. I use to lose up to 3 kilos overnight by cutting water/food by 6pm and taking 10g of vit c before bed.
I lose loads overnight most of the time in the summer - because of hayfever I end up breathing through my mouth all night and just dehydrate, so it's back by mid-morning and 4-5 pints of water. So block your nose up the night before and you're sorted!

Did a fair bit of gaurd passing practice ,which i really
enjoyed.

Got a load of off cuts of scaffold so i may be able
to make something out of them.

BJJ SUMMER CAMP
Finally got to train with everyone at the summer camp.
Was due to train 10.30 in the morning but had a few bits
of private work to attend to first.As usual life ran as
smoothly as a cheese grater.Took all day to do the `little`
bits of work so i didn`t make any of the seminars during
the day. Made it to the `open mat` at 7.30
WOW ! i was so suprised & humbled with everybody i rolled
with.I got r.s.i of my hands & wrists from tapping.I had my eyes

There were some real quality people there who`s game was
smooth ,slick & way more flowing than mine.
I`m now getting a better picture of what i should be doing
& am realising i need to be putting in a hell of a lot more effort
& time than i have been.We live & learn i suppose.

Attended today & it was double leg, attacks & defences.
Trained with a lad from my gym & had a real blast.
Phillipe Souza got us to take the mats out into the
tennis courts & so we trained alfresco.
Did loads of tech then sparred the moves with
everybody.Pedro decided to turn it into open
sparring ,but by this time most people were fubared.
I got around as many people as poss but was
disapointed as Pedro & Ze Marcelo were taken up
by some of their purple belts.Philipe was a bit injured
& so sat it out.
Great day ,top atmosphere & i got to take it to
some of the lads who turned me over last night.

Not sure if what i did was v-bar or not ? I used a
3ft long bit of scaffold & just lifted it off of the
floor (i think thats what Nick meant ? :017: ).
Dont know if it`s a good weight but its a starting
point for me ?
Will add some speed grippers in next time ,just to
get my forearms used to the pump they`ll get when
rolling :045:

Very hard compared to what i thought it might be.
The 10k took loads of effort (god knows how Nick
does it with 20k for 5 rotations ).
I`m not sure if the tyre is the right size or not ?

Got lost on way to bjj training today so spent all
day sulking .Thought i`d do a bit of v-bar in the
`grip pit` & didn`t expect to have an audience.
We have got a very small mouse problem in our
basement so i`ve been setting traps for them,
lets just say they worked & that my little
audience was a captive 1.V-bar felt quite easy
until i got to the 90k & that felt like it was welded
to the floor.
Would of done tyre pinch as well but my skin
is starting to peel off & crack so i dont want to
have to miss bjj training,after all thats what
my grip work is for.

Started to use a bit of strength & lo & behold i arm barred 1 of
the lads who normally mashes me.Controlled a big judo lad as well.
I think i`m going to have to try & use strength with tech now instead

Our black belt Pedro Bessa came down today.
Only 4 of us turned up so he hammered us
with a very hard warm up ,which seemed to
last for ever :016:
Worked on passing the`spider gaurd`.
Finished with about 20 mins sparring.
All in all a nice little day.
Tooth still playing up a bit though.

First event training i`ve done since Devons strongest man.
Not trained any real weights for months either.
It was great to catch up with everyone & see how far
my strength had decreased.Bit of an eye opener as well.
I reckon with 12mnths proper training & diet i reckon i
could be a far better strongman than i was before (not that
i was any good then though :044: ).
I`m going to have a serious think about training again.I`ll still
roll as i think the stretching & cardio will do me good.The only
thing i can see holding me back is the nature of my job ,especialy
in summer.
Off to bjj now .How much i`ll be able to do is unclear due to the
fact i`m stiff as a board from yesterday :017:
