Where'd anybody get theirs from? Can't seem to find any online that aren't ridiculously expensive. Don't know of any local scaffolders either and just half-inching one from a site's a bit on the cheeky side of things!

Any help appreciated.

Think everybody on here, including me, got them from Beng, but I think he's stopped doing 'em cos his mate was pissing him about a bit.

Sorry :102:

Come to think of it, I know Tim (Narc) and Aled (ATZ) made their own, they should be able to help.

Got mine off Ebay after someone posted a link to some rare auction on here ages ago.

There were no bidders apart from me.

I paid £30 I think. It was going to cost £60 in total with delivery, but the couriers knocked it back due to the size of it, so the guy brought it to my door free of charge.

Back of the net.. :038:

Only takes standard plates but its still a ****ing good thickbar.

Yeah, I kept poncing around and never got round to asking Beng whilst he was doing them. Grr.

Just wondering if something simple like two baked bean tins with top and bottom removed and slid over the top of a bar would be any good... Probably not for deads, but maybe for curls or something.

Luck bastard - can't find any on ebay atm. Best price I've found is a place in New York that does them for $99, but I'm waiting to hear what delivery will be - probably not pretty!

Err, this any good, looks like a half decent price :

Yeah, that was the cheapest UK one I found, though adding VAT to it still makes it over £80 before we even get to postage... I was hoping for something a little cheaper, but it's looking like a decent option.

Yeah that's not bad at all.

If I didn't get mine for cheap I would have paid up to £100.

Get the yellow pages out big man, I can guarentee there will be a scaffold firm farily locally, at least within a tenners worth of petrol for sure. If you can go to their yard and ask nicely (as I did) they will have some old scaffold lying about not suitable for work anymore but with more than enough strength for lifting with that you could prob have fro free. Then all you need are two of these (http://www.fitness-superstore.co.uk/__12_product_info3_asp3_5_prdID4_31747_prdName34_O lympic_Training_Collar_%28Pair%295_prtID5_100635.h tml) and some cheap collars like these (http://www.fitness-superstore.co.uk/__12_product_info3_asp3_5_prdID4_31737_prdName32_O lympic_Spring_Collar_%28Pair%295_prtID5_100633.htm l) to keep the weight on. Use the screw fix collars and bind them on real tight, bend the bars on them for the extra hardcore look. Grand total of £17 for the collars plus what ever petrol for picking up the bar.

This is the bar I bought from Ebay, loaded with the Argos classic 10's:

It's knurled. Seemed freshly spray painted, but the layers of chalk suggested otherwise.

mine was a piece of barrier from a car park, with 4 of the locking collars atz posted. only 5' long but with a lick of paint its great. no knurling though if thats an issue. i had to use locking collars as the outer diameter was very slightly less that the regular spring closed diameter. works great !!

Good ideas from the other guys and at the risk of sounding like an asshole(what, moi?) google "make thick bar" for other ideas. And what I did was used 2 lengths of pvc pipe cut to size that slip over the dumbell handles I use.The bits that stop the weights from sliding onto the handle fit quite nicely inside the pipe.Use for farmers walks/timed holds etc.

I havnt seen or heard from my bar builder mate in probably 9 months, i can have a chat if you want and see what he would want to do it if he agrees i guess youd be looking at about
£50 delivered as i know he wanted more money and thats why i kinda got bored of it as i made literally nothing.

666
21-05-2007, 21:34
If you didn't mind Mart that'd be awesome, £50 was about what I was expecting / hoping to pay so if you did that'd be cool. Cheers mate.

Finally got myself a thickbar a few days ago.

I had been on the lookout for scaffolders for a while. I was walking to work running on time and managed to get a 7ft piece of scaffolding off them for a fiver. It must have been quite a bizarre site for others walking to work to have seen me in my suit walking back home with a piece of scaffolding. :030:

Gonna order some collars now. To anyone who wants but doesn't yet have a thickbar; keep your eyes peeled for scaffolders in your local area :ninja:

i yanked mine off the supports on my uni car park, it looked a bit loose and a quick push and shove it fell to the floor, not 7ft but fits perfect for axle work in my gym.

Maybe a little gimmicky, but for £15 what do people think of these?

I think you could make better one's yourself!

i agree, lol.
you want a thick DB chris? scaffold. 18" and a few clamps. recently i made permanent collars on my 5ft oly bar by using athletic tape. wrap it reasonably thick around one point and then off to the sides to smooth it out. works a treat, and alot cheaper than most methods.

What I've done is cut two small pieaces of scaffold to fit over the handles of the standard dumbells I have. All you need to do is close them in between the plates and use spin lock collars. Make sure it's nice and tight so they done move about. Simple!
