View Full Version : Lifting before MA sessions
Right guys, my schedule is increasinly hectic and I have less and less time to train. What are thoughts on lifting immediatly before MA sessions?
Moday
Lifting 1 hour, Muay Thai 2 hours
Tues: Rest
Wed
Muay Thai
Thurs
Lifting 1 hour, BJJ 2hours
Fri: Rest
Sat BJJ 2 hours (not every week)
Sunday
HST or Rest.
I'm trying to thrash out a new schedule and get my diet in order, following Alex's diet program and getting all kinds of awesome in time for summer. MA training is going ok but im struggling to find time for lifting.

First question would be, why is lifting 1 hour?
Thats how long I think it would take me to get it all done, inc movement prep and pre/re hab work. I would try to do the same routine i was on before:
A)
Movement Prep
Split squats 5*5
Dips 5*5
rows 5*5
hanging scap retractions 3*12
cubans 3*12
angel wings 3*12
B)
Movement Prep
Cleans 5*5
Vertical Pushups 5*5
Chins 5*5
Face Pulls 3*12
L flies 3*12
scap pushups 3*12
why not do that 300 workout? That takes 15-20min...
Because I can't....watched the flick last night though...looking at the results I wish I could.
TBH, **** it, i think its more important I just get in the gym and do something rather than trying to optimise what is currently nothing!

Nice link Al ;)
I also wondered about lifting before MA session - I take it I should be fine doing weights the day before Muay Thai?

you'd probably find you're ok lifting before trainnig as long as u are fueled, unless u do a particularly hard session the effects of the workout probably wont of kicked in that quick

If I could only do weights directly before MA and I'd turn up at the end of the warmup/conditioning part of the class, do a bit of movement prep. and go straight into technique practice.

Thats fine. For me, MA affects lifting more than lifting affects MA.
It's settled then, lifting will be done before Muay Thai on Mondays, and before BJJ on Thursday. I will let you all know how i get on so you can benefit from my experiances.
I will be on a very high protein diet, with low carbs, breakfast and post workout only for direct carbs to be honest. I will be supplementing it up like a mother bitch too.
I will be adding photos to my journal too for you all to marvel at.

Surely you're going to need PRE w/o carbs?

Assuming your understanding of the first statement is true, which it isn't, but for the sake of this point we'll say it is.......why would he need carbs pre workout?

Also, the protocol calls for peri-workout drink which wasnt mentioned

What do you mean? Direct carbs pre WO to give you energy and fuel it? Plus if you don't have carbs it will deplete your glycogen stores even faster, and the body will try and use as much of the protein in your body as possible for fuel.. ?

Protein or fat
The body can store 600g of glycogen, whether that's enough to fuel 1 training session I dunno.........I would assume so

Does the body chose fat over protein in preference for energy?
i wouldve thought so, since protein is for rebuilding and repair...

It depends on how long the fat has been stored, and how long the protein has been around for - basically it takes some energy to access the body's energy reserves to generate energy (if that makes sense), so it chooses the most accessible reserves for what it needs at that time - hence why when you're cutting, the flab round your waist (for blokes) and hips (for the ladies) is the last to go, it's cause it's where the body stored it first so it's the hardest to break down.
