We had to have a thread on this really...

Those of you who have the misfortune of training and/or working in a commercial gym - Give us your amusing tales of January gym incompetence.

One to start you off - A fat git lying on his back on the floor doing explosive pushes with a medicine ball barely avoids breaking his nose by failing to catch the ball on the way down...

...on every single rep in his set.

I'm glad that I amused you ^ :mad:What's not amusing?

The guy's barely getting the ball six inches out of his hands but nearly drops it on his face at least ten times during a single set. He's throwing it upwards at an angle, trying to bounce it off a nearby mirror as he does it and he's waving his legs in the air throughout.

Maybe you had to be there...

I've seen a guy with an A4 notepad, may as well of had the brief case to go with it, scribbling christ knows what after each rep - yes rep not set and having a 5 minute glance around the gym to see if anyone is checking him out each time. The only muscles he's gonna develop will be in his hand!!

jan 06 i was waiting to use a treadmill (dont start, ok) and some middle aged woman was moaning to the gym manager that i wouldn't let her jump to the front of the queue as she should have priority because it was next on her "program" that had been designed for her

chavs using the smith machine for OHP
chavs using their mates for assisted lat pull downs

Normaly I would have a lot to moan about here, but the gym I am at now is pretty good actually, some times you see guys doing a million reps, but thats as bad as it gets.

PikeKing
30-01-2007, 21:55
i saw the famous gym owner training today, chest, legs, biceps no less, awesome split

he was training with some guy, their last chest exercise was a chest press machine, every rep they did the other person would help them complete the set.

no squats either, i saw some leg pressing and seated leg curls, thats it

Guy saying that he wasn't training for size, that he was already "too big really" and now just lifted for rugby - at ~11 stone doing one-arm machine bicep curls.

Guy bench pressing for sets of 10, even though he failed the first rep on his sternum so had all 10 reps assisted.

30-01-2007, 23:13
The most back popping one I've seen was the guy who followed the routine from Arnies book doing 'cleans'. They were round backed as much as possible SLDL's followed by dodgy reverse curl where he leans back/arches as much the other way. I winced every time he done a rep.

Not too much to report except for the usual gym abuse/social gathering-talking the pounds off.
Though i did see some bloke at the cable crossover machine, he put a bench in front of the stack, put the horse stirrup handle on,whilst standing on the bench crouched down and did a movement similar to machine dips with one arm at a time, hard to describe. but it was a first for me lol. odd

i recently had the pleasure of being witness to an ex-steroid user, who has now shrunk, doing tricep pulldowns with a belt on :017:

but the best one ever was what i saw in Egypt - 2 guys standing, facing each other (like squaring up to one another) and holding each others hand (right with right and then left with left) with a dumbbell in the other hand, standing and shoulder pressing their respective dumbbells together at the same time. the same was also done for dumbbell curls. beat that! :044:

Well hang on a minute. Bloke I was stood next to in the gym today was a classic:

- Used some blue paper towel as knuckle wraps to do some truly horrendous shadow boxing;
- Rolled his sleeves up to "show-off" his 12" pythons while he curled, then treated us all to a massive double-bi shot;
- Bobbed his head, dusted his shoulders off and shook his hands in stereotypical ghetto-cool stylee to whatever his iPod was playing;
- Screamed and nodded to his reflection whilst bashing out his 8kg power-curl 21s before just dumping the weights because "they're just so heavy, man!"

It was the knuckle wraps that got me the most...

They have been edited out because they are annoying, unhelpful to anyone and pointless.

I would have thought that being banned from affs may have enlightened you to the fact that people tire of your smarmy one liners. I can't honestly believe you don't know what I'm talking about, or that you can't discern between the occasional good humoured dig and serial toolery. So that's what the editing of your posts is about. Sooner or later though, I suspect I may tire of that also...

Icepick
01-02-2007, 15:08
Hmm, I'm well impressed that you manage to remember my posts, as with the quotes, one of them was recycled from alex, and the other one was the result of being provoked.

And as with affs supp, do you really think that I take it that seriously to reflect and take caution in treating an asshole like an asshole because I was banned on some other forum.

Narc
01-02-2007, 15:25
If it was the occasional post no-one would care, unfortunately it is indicative of a general trend in the way you post these days, which seems to boil people's piss.

As for treating assholes like assholes, I'm glad we agree on the way a forum should be run. And I'm sure you'll understand then that if you continue to swagger round like the fat kid at school screaming for attention and admiration at how cool and edgy you are, you will be banned from here too. Maybe true with afs supps where I use to stop by to rip on people, but not on here or other forums I use.

which seems to boil people's piss.

It's not my fault that there are sensitive grown men that get emotional over the internet.

Thank you for your attention, I'm done with your forum.

And then follow it up with a childish comment like this^^ "I'm not being told what to do so you can all **** off" Toys out of the pram everywhere.

I'm sure the guys with a keen interest in PL on here appreciate your training posts etc; all Tim is saying is to quit the constant unnecessary posts ripping people for the sake of it - Its funny when its needed but not all the time. Appart from your training log I can't remember the last useful thing you posted, whole point of a forum is to share experience not constantly self promote.

This isn't a dig just something to consider if you should choose to keep posting. :023:

i'm sure a load of other inexperienced lifters will feel the same as this:

i lurked and read IC for a while, feeling that this wasn't quite the stage for me to keep my journal, but the more you read, the more comments you find from the (seemingly) more knowledgeable guys saying how that as much as the appreciate the journals of the seriously strong the one thing IC needs is some noobies to keep the board going.

So when in our ignorance and naivity we attempt to expand our knowledge by asking exactly is meant in a post especially when abbreviations are used please don't shoot us down with a flippant one liner

here endeth the rant

BengDogg
01-02-2007, 18:51
No need to rant my man, for the pick has been banned. Too many people were getting sick of him and ic is a good forum atm, so with his attitude to others getting worse the banning stick was waved. He used to come across well at one point so i dont know when or why the wheel fell of but it did

captaincaveman

I agree Tricky, my initial comment was a bit tongue in cheek, hence the :D however some people do find it a lot harder to add mass than others, while one person may gain a pound every other week on 4000 cals a day, some people would need a sports bra after a fortnight, thats why the eating comment pissed me off, its much easier for some than others. Thats like me saying to someone with a snails pace metabolism "Get on the treadmill fatty". Just to say my bodyweight is up 35lbs in 6 months so to be fair I don't think I need advice of that sort.

Hope my post didn't piss you off, am a little confused as to whether this ^^ has come from what I said - just to clear things up (if it did) the January joiner was slagging off guys who have clearly worked hard and maybe taken years to get where they are and are dedicated, i wasn't slating him for not being able to gain weight it was just his attitude towards the regulars. I saw this Iranian guy(not seen him since jan) in the gym the other week doing Bench Press, he has the most horrible form ever - he bounces the bar off his sternum, the only part of his body on the bench were his upper traps, one of his arms was flared, and the other tucked. I had to get a close up view of how bad it was so offered to spot him on his 100kg, I really wanted his sternum to crack or something. Anyway, His first rep was a struggle, his second near failure, but then came the massive bounces off his sternum and he managed 7 reps - WTF!!! This is EXTREME ego training.

Gym boss likes employing clueless women that he can brainwash into his ‘machines are best, curling in the squat rack style training’ It is seriously worrying that she is going to be teaching – doesn’t effect me one little bit but it still annoyed me.

your boss is a cock by sounds of things.

you know what, I see so many half squatters, knee bends in there, it ****ing unbelievable, from 60-220 kilos, that shit really pisses me off. It's not even about the weight, I'm easily impressed when I see people that know what they are doing. Me and a mate was blown away by the sight of a woman squatting 40kgs with great form and to depth.

Not really - they don't affect my training, it's at work so I can use it at lunchtimes, it's only £18 a month and it's packed with student girls wearing not a lot.

Also a guy squatting 80kg with knee wraps, belt and singlet. His mate gets in and ups it to 140kg, (not a bad rom either) but his stance was so narrow that I thought he was going to buckle at any given moment, his poor knees!

> 3 guys with THE worst deadlift form I have ever seen plugging away with 110kg, when I say bad form I mean massively roundbacked, stiff legged, odd foot positioning etc, then the biggest of the 3 whacks 140 on the bar, does one horrible rep, looks around for admiring glances and signs off with "good workout guys"

> 1/8 squats in the rack with Mark Reardon (2paclives on) bar positioning.

> Two huge BBers screaming as they rep out 120kg rack pulls, tough guys eh!

Needless to say my Clean and Presses were looked on as if they were some new alien training method.

Kid of about 16-18, must have weighed about 50kg doing curls with silver dumbells then doing a bicep pose in the mirror.

2 twins about 18, at best weigh about 70kg -one says to his roid head cousin/older brother "am I the strongest 18 year old around? I can use the 32kg dumbbells". Then he proceeds to take his shirt of to train the rest of the workout.

Some prat in the gym told me that power training is dangerous for my shoulders. In 'real' martial arts what I should do is poke someone in the neck with my thumb and this will kill them instantly. Me: hmmmmmmpff, i could train you better than her.

Mrs Chi: yeah, but i need to get back into training gently

Me: right in that case 12 weeks to ease back into it, then i'm buying you a book called the news rules of lifting for women which is written by a couple of well respected authors.

Oh and I often see people doing box squats with a box 2 times too tall and not actually ever hitting it!! What's the point!?! I'm guessing they've seen the powerlifters box-squat and are trying to copy it??

I think the guy training with his hoodie on backwards wins this though!!! WTF!!

What I saw last week;

some chav trying out the deadlift with the most horrible form ever - he was not using his legs one iota, and his back was so rounded it was funny - it's a good job he was only using 60 odd kilo.

Last night I witnessed someone fail a Bent over row, with an ez bar with a 10kg plate on each side. By my calculations that 27.5kg, and I thought I was weak!!!!!****in' awesome, I'm always suprised when an untrained n00b of normalish weight is incapable of even doing a single chin, but that is whole new levels of amazing.

I haven't seen any proper gym shenanigans since I was back in Edinburgh, but even then it was just the old 1/8th squats. The guy spotting, who should really know better, kept telling him his form was fine.

Yeah to be fair this guy was a newbie, but I was thinking back to the days when I was 16 and first started gyming it, and even then I was benching 60kg etc. It was such a shock to see someone so frail as there are quite a few strong people at my gym, he did do two reps though....

One of my favs was watching some dude bench 60 whilst havinge both legs up in the air doing a little dance. Think Narc and I went to far as we where bent over laughing and pointing.

Or when some guy was lying on a bench with his head over the end nodding from left to right, up and down. When he finished Narc then got on the same bench to Mimic him while saying wait not finished, wait not finished. I was laughing the other guy looked well pissed off lol

Starting to think taking the piss out of noobs is the most fun.

Bench guy ruled. Neck guy is an utter dweeb. Overhead kids doing 22.5kg are pretty funny too.

I think people are getting more and more sedentary and gym training is getting more and more gay so that people now have no idea what strong (or even normal) looks like.

Today I was waiting for the cage while one of the large gym staff (probably about twice my weight) was struggling to do 60kg quarter squats. He turned to me and asked, "Can you lift this weight?" with a tone of voice like I should probably not be in the free weights area on account of being a small woman. I gave him a withering look and replied, "That's easy. It's only 60kg. I use that as a warm up." It shut him up and he left.

Been away on training this week so had the pleasure of using the gym in the university of Warwick. I witnessed some gems...

- Three Asian guys struggling with a 40kg Bench. They were on the station for ages and when they got up to 60 I asked if I could jump in to warm-up. The looks on their faces were pretty funny.

- Thumbless grip 1/2 deadlifts. Imagine something inbetween a RDL and a Dead.

- The old classic curls in a squat rack

- 2 Guys doing about 18 sets on the lat pulldown using every different handle attachment and every different dort of pulldown

I did see a tiny chinese guy pull a 170kg dead though, he must have weight no more than 60kg himself!

I've seen a few classics in my time too, but the one that sticks in the mind at the moment is three guys doing one armed lateral raises in tandem while all holding onto something for support with the other arm.

Wow, i forgot how bad regular gyms were: In the edinburgh uni gym a group of about 6 guys- for some reason 3 of them London rude boi types, a couple of yanks and some local twatbags apparently all AF players- all doing curls on the platform, from squat stands with an eleiko bar filled with the full size 2.5kg plastic bumpers. They were in all seriousness chatting about how they really liked their bicep veins as they made their arms look "really toned and shaped." One had particular favourites apparently.

Apart from that some guy way bigger than me doing 1/8 squats (that's being generous, the safety bars were set about the bottom of his rib cage and he was staying a good few inches clear) with 120 and screaming his lungs out with every rep.

I've been to the gym in the evening a few times recently, it seems the decline DB bench, DB pullover and DB overhead tri ext program is very popular.

This morning i got to witness roundback BO rows, with hip drive, in the smith machine.

"Barry" the 50 something BBer that frequents the gym in the evening who is normally found lieing on his back doing cable curls in the cable crossover machine asked my wife what postural realignment meant.

The middle age women who ALWAYS places the BOSU ball under the chin up bar to do her bodyweight 1/4 squats on no longer leaves it under the bar while she supersets tricep pushdowns after i kicked it across the gym. I blame lack of sleep.

One yoof training another on how to squat safely in the smith machine. I'm not sure it his spine or knees will be first to blow out, but i'm positive when they transfer to an actual barbell they will no longer be able to squat with their feet behind the bar.

If your skinny and can bang out millions of half rep chin-ups don't expect your fat friend who has struggled to do any to miraculously manage to do them with 10kg strapped to them.

I did deadlifts, lunges and abs the other day. When i arrived the polish guy was doing biceps, when i left he was still doing biceps. He only ever does chest or biceps i'm sure.

I think i've forgotten some, but i feel much better now.

Team benchers!! Some geezer turns up to the gym with 'air lats', tight tracksuit, fake tan, spiky hair etc... starts talking to the instructor behind the desk, the gym instructor asks him what he's benching he says he's up to 120kg now so he goes to the smith machine with his mates warmups up and gets 3 of his goons to help him lift 100kg. Then he sticks on 120kg, and all 4 of them were grunting to get it up. Then he spent the rest of his session curling. The worst thing about it is he is a qualified personal trainer (qualified with the same course i did) and actually has plenty of work.

The machines in commercial gyms are a waste of good steel/iron - melt it all down and make some some nice thick handled globe dumbells and axles. Then people in these gyms might actually grow a bit from year to year. The machine that lets you go forward and back but not side to side is even gayer than the smith machine. Health and safety first though.

Spotting some guy in the gym today - he asked to join in when I was on 100 saying he was going to do 8; he dive bombed 4 reps and just about bounced them back up, then proceeded to fail 4 on the trot, with me having to unstaple him each rep... Then when I moved up to 110 he said he'd go for that too and would aim for 4 to 6! WTF! Again he managed half his guess but kept going anyway... I felt like a traitor for spotting him but didn't want to waste my time explaining why he was being such an arse after he ignored my suggestions of not lowering the bar to his neck and not having his wrists bent back at 90 degrees.

I was spotting a guy in a similar situation and predictably, he got completely pinned. So i picked the bar off him and put it back in the stands. yep sounds familiar i remember when i was 16 and first joined a gym , a gay commercial one. old geezer in a smith machine. He did 100kg. Then he called the gym instructor over and he did 140kg with the gym instructor rowing it. Then he puts on 180kg and asked me and another lad there to spot aswell (each side). 4 man team bench now. Not enough. 220kg goes on, i was a noob at the time but asked him 'surely that's too much' so he goes and grabs abother lad at the water fountain and with 4 spotters all straining to help so he doesn't get stuck he does a half bench with it. Bear in mind this is in the smith machine aswell!! Best part is afterwards he gets up flares his lats and says 'when i was younger i used to do 300kg. 666lbs. Looks like i haven't lost too much'
