Chap in the gym mentioned there was a south west strongman comp, so did a little searching, and http://www.southweststrongman.co.uk/ they even have a training ground http://www.southweststrongman.co.uk/Training.htm

I am spunking my pants in excitment right now. No doubt I am far too weak to compete, but, it's something to aim for, might have to give the chap a call and see if they've room for a small one in one of thier training sessions...

wow the 2005 winner is from the same area of bristol as me, wonder if he trains at my gym

Cool. The 2005 events look quite easy, 65k farmers walk and 150kg deadlift hold for example. Looks like it got harder for 2006. I think I could still do some of the novice events though, 200kg yoke I could do, if they mean half ton as in 500lbs/230kg I could do the deadlift hold no problem, I could load a 60kg barrel to 4ft I'm sure, 90kg farmers would be tough, not sure what a duck walk is. I think I'm going to give the chap a ring and see if I can't get down there next saturday to have a go at some stuff. If I thought I could actually do all the events I would definitely compete, even to come last, it would still be ace

i tihnk the duck walk might be walking with something on a loading pin

yeah you could defo do those events...

65kg farmers walk! Not to piss on your chips or owt, but the under 90kg comp in Yorkshire was 125's! ...150kg DL hold seems bizarrely low too...the best time would have to be like 10mins or something?? !

Well, anyway even getting down and training with a group of deditcated, stronger guys will advance your training no end so get to it i says.

Duck Walk is walking with a loaded handle kinda 'dangling' between your legs like if you had a 50kg ballbag and were holding onto it for grim death with chalky hands

Yeah that was the 2005 event, does seem stupidly easy, it got alot harder for 2006, perhaps it will again this year.
And yeah, agreed, so shall do!

That looks like so much fun. When are you going? I wish I was bigger and taller so I could train for strongwoman.

Narc
07-01-2007, 09:51
Yeah it does doesn't it :) Well they have training sessions every saturday, although I was thinking I might hold off a week or two so I can get my 100kg OHS done first. Do you really need to be bigger and taller? I would imagine you're strong enough, or soon going to be...

Cheers. I think I need to be at least 6 inches taller and 20kg heavier to be even vaguely competitive unless there's a midget strongwoman competition...

If there was, I'd go to it :)

Oh man, just randomly following links around and have discovered that there are actually two training sites in Paignton with all the equipment you can think of and there is also a devon strongman http://dsm.devonstrongman.co.uk/index.htm and another training ground in Cullompton 30 minutes away from me. They are also holding a comp this year, in October, events to be..

Novice;

85kg Axle for reps 75sec

90kg farmers for distance/40m with 1 turn

Yoke 220kg 20m for time

Silver Dollar Deadlift ( with straps )

loading barrels 2x50kg 2x75kg 1x90kg 1x110kg

Whether or not I do the summer one, I will definitely be doing that one

I'll definately come for a session with you Tim. I've not done any event training in about 8 months but I love it. I have a vague memory of seeing you on Saturday night in my drunken haze! Lol! I'm getting too old for that sort of drinking.

You gonna be in Body2K tonight?

All the best

Hey man, glad to see you joined!! Yup, in Timepiece. Aye I'll be in the gym tonight around 7ish, see you there! As for not having done any event training in 8 months, I've never done any, and I'm half your size, so it's all good lol.

van_halen
22-01-2007, 13:27
If you're half my size it's only because I'm fat! lol!

A jolly strongman outing it is then. I'll have to find a suitable weekend. Are there any other SW people on here?

The events and weights have now been listed for the July SW strongman comp....

Event 1 Lorry Pull for 30 Metres 11 Tons
Event 2 Barrel Squats 80kg - 90kg - 100kg - 120kg
Event 3 Conan's Walk 200kg
Event 4 Mini Cooper Car Hercules Hold 1 Ton Each Hand
Event 5 Barrel And Sack Load Barrel X 4 = 60-80kg, Sacks X 2 = 100kg
Event 6 Vikings Press 90-100kg
Event 7 Southwest Medley (75 Metre Course) 200kg Tyre Flip
150kg Duck Walk
80kg Steel Wheel Carry

That's the novices obviously. Not quite sure what is meant by the barrel squat, but I have asked. Only ones I am somwehat unsure of my ability to complete are the lorry pull and the hercules hold

Narc
25-02-2007, 11:54
Tim, Paignton, events training? this Saturday? You could skip deads seeing as you jumped ahead a week anyway. I want to see if I have any chance of doing this or not...

Really? Have you ever tried lifting a 100kg sack? Viking pressing 90 kilos?

Barrell Squats I would assume is where they roll the barrels into a basket, similar to a smith machine squat :ninja:

Narc
25-02-2007, 12:00
That's what I thought about the barrel squats, but then that woud be 390 with the last barrel in....

Viking press I imagine to be easier than a push press as there is no balance issue? 100kg sack, yeak ok may be hard, but I reckon I could do it

An empty barrell weighs 10k, so each barrell could only add 10k...

Yes, but you don't only have to do it once, fresh, probably more like 12 times, ****ed.

100kg sack, yeak ok may be hard, but I reckon I could do it
Well our sandbag for HST weighs 30k, the heaviest I have ever lifted (again fresh) is 90k onto a 40" platform

Basically I wouldn't say those events were easy by any stretch of the imagination...

Fred
25-02-2007, 12:07
blokes who did it last year look pretty huge too

would defo need to get fat

Narc
25-02-2007, 12:13
Yeah but then 120 sounds very light....

Oh I'm under no illusions that it would be easy, and would fully expect to come last, but I can live with that, as long as I'm able to complete all the events without embarassing myself. I do reckon I could push jerk 90-100 on a viking for a few reps.

I see what you're sayng about the sack though, I've never tried it, so I guess I need to before i decide anything, I suspect it only needs to be loaded onto a flatbed though, so probably not as high as 42".

Yeah, the hugeness factor is def an issue, I am going to be the skinniest weasel there even if I don't go on the diet I had planned to go on...

Sandbag work is bastardly difficult in comparison to the bar, considering the weight shift and grip difference.

Reminds me to steal some golden granules from the local beach...

Sweet, I joined another board where all the Devon Strongman geezers post and Will (The Paignton guy) has said we're more than welcome to come down and train whenever, as has Allan the dude that runs the Cully site. Itching to get to it now...

awesome events, though the weights indicate that its quite cardio vascular comp :D 6 items to load, and 3 part medley - would kill me!

Are you doing this comp for sure mate? I'd really recommend committing to it - dont think about it too much, just ****ing go for it.

I put my name down for the first timers strongman comp in scotland on March 4th and ever since that decision my training has sky rocketed! Nothing like training with a proper fixed goal which you cant pussy out from.

Also, you progress with the events really quickly, so much of it is down to technique, though maybe those events like the loading and medley dont have much technique in them... But things like conans wheel, tyre flip, viking press all improve loads when you get to try the toys first.

Cant wait till next weekend for the comp! :D

Sweet, good luck chaps. If it's the same rules as WSM and the Super-Series, you can't push jerk a Viking press, only push press it.

Narc
26-02-2007, 13:40
I'm going to have a crack at some event training this weekend, and see whether the guys there think I have a chance of doing it. I see what you're saying, good advice I reckon, I'll definitley sign up if I think I can do all the events. Would be good to have a tangible goal to work towards.

Good luck in your comp, let us know how it goes, and whack some pics/vids up!

thanks mate! Goal is to place near the half way :D Dont care so much about the placing as much as just giving it a good ****ing go and making myself proud.

23 participants so it should be a busy day indeed.

I'm sure there will be vids and pics on www.sugdenbarbell.co.uk since fair few of SB forum members are doing the comp (me, jonnymills, jonathan, rosco, buzz and sugden gym machine Anthony). I'll give a shout when they are up.

About "being able to do the events" i am pretty sure there are going to be fair few who wont be able to finish all the events in the comp i am doing, especially the yoke + chain drag and stones. So i would not worry about not being able to do all the events, as long as you can give them a really good go.

I would seriously consider giviong this lot a go at this lot, would have concerns over the Conans walk and Hercules Hold but would still have a bash. Plus it'd be off season for me, give me something to train towards.

With Tim's consent we could make this the summer meet up event? What do ya think? :030: :045:
