I have to break 2 pieces of wood for my 1st Degree in June and I am a little concerned as I have never done this before. Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can practice this apart from buying a pice of break wood to practice with???

You can buy rebreakable boards, I've never used them tho. The idea of breaking wood/bricks with something as delicate and important as your hands has never really appealed to me.

What type of martial art do you follow?

Which reminds me..

Bruce Lee once wrote about strengthening the forearms

Take a stick and hit forearms, when you become used to the pain start using a bigger stick and keep going.

Eventually you will kill all the nerve endings in your forearm and you will have forearm like steel.

Ya that’s what I ment when I said break wood lol!!!!

Ya I agree its not something that I am that interested in doing but I have to for my grading so needs must and all that.

I do kick-boxing and kung – fu at the minute. Ya we are advised to do body conditioning as it is part of the syllabus for about 3rd degree black belt. Although that is something I don’t look forward too as when you stop doing the conditioning your nerve endings grow back and the pain is crippling so I may leave this until I need to do it lol!!!!

It's easier than it looks - I smashed breeze blocks just cos I thought it'd be cool before I even did any training. Just tense hard and aim through it, piece of piss.

Nerves don't grow back once they're dead though, hence people don't recover from being paralysed etc.

Cheers for the votes of confidence and the pointers guys ill try not think too much about it and carry on with my training as normal.

666 I may have to look into this then. I was told about the nerve endings growing back years ago but never looked it up.

when you stop doing the conditioning your nerve endings grow back and the pain is crippling so I may leave this until I need to do it lol!!!!

this might explain why i can still hit things as hard as i want without hurting my hands despite not doing martial arts in a long time now, basically when i took my job 8 years ago i had to pretty much give it up as i was working away so much so that is a fairly long time, ive dabbled back in since but sadly i cant commit as i had a really good jkd/mma teacher. ah well i plan on restarting when my lil one is old enough to take it up, but i am more interested in grappling and ground fighting as i have the kick punch headbut side of things cvered fairly well lol

Ya that’s the only thing that I miss in the kick-boxing is grappling. We don’t do any of that. Cheers for the vote of confidence I’m sure Ill manage it but just like to be prepared.

Just out of interest are off the MT site??? Your avatar looks familiar.

Depends on the type of nerve damage, some can be permanent, unlikely that that will occur from just hitting the surface or the skin though....
